Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for friday, the 9th day of August, 2024. Thank God it's Friday!!! Fillers from the Olympics in Paris, France shows that the United States is still leading the medals table although the Chinese are giving them a run for their money. The USA now have 33 Gold, 39 Silver and 39 Bronze (111 medals); China is 2nd with 33 Gold, 27 Silver, 24 Bronze (83 medals) with Australia on the 3rd position with 18 Gold, 16 Silver and 14 Bronze (48 medals).
Larry then veers off to have a look at today in #history.
Larry begins his look at today in history from the USA. He finds out that on this day in 2014, Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager, was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, sparking days of civil unrest and protests fuelled by tensions between Ferguson's mostly Black populace and its predominantly white administration and police force.
From the USA, Larry goes to the events of WWII. He finds out that on this day in 1945, Nagasaki was hit by the United States' second atomic bomb dropped on Japan during WWII.
From the events of WWII, Larry goes back to the United States of America. He finds out that on this day in 1974, Gerald R. Ford was sworn in as President of the United States of America, succeeding Richard Nixon, who had resigned.
From the USA, Larry goes to Switzerland. He finds out that on this day in 1896, Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist, who was the first to conduct a systematic study of how children learn to understand was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
From Switzerland, Larry goes to England. He finds out that on this day in 1927, Robert Shaw, an English actor, author, and playwright who rose to prominence for his roles in Shakespearean plays before embarking on a successful film career was born in Westhoughton, Lancashire, England.
Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1963, Whitney Houston, an American singer and actress who was one of the most successful musical performers in the 1980s and 1990s was born in Newark, New Jersey, U.SA.
Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
