Larry Is Alive 8 August 2024: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for thursday, the 8th day of August, 2024. This is my first hunt for Larry in this month of August. Well, Larry has been a busy man who goes about his business in the most dedicated and quiet way. Glad to resume my hunt for him this month.

The Olympics in Paris, France is now the centre of attention in the world of sports. The United States lead the medals table with 30 Gold, 38 Silver and 35 Bronze (103 medals); China is 2nd with 28 Gold, 25 Silver, 19 Bronze (72 medals) with Australia on the 3rd position with 18 Gold, 14 Silver and 12 Bronze (44 medals).

Larry then veers off to have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1974, faced with the near-certain threat of impeachment for his role in the Watergate affair, US President Richard M. Nixon tendered his resignation and Gerald Ford took office the next day.

From the USA, Larry goes to Tibet. He finds out that on this day in 2011, Lobsang Sangay, a Tibetan scholar, was named Prime Minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile, making him the first non-monk and someone born outside of Tibet to hold the role.

From Tibet, Larry goes to the world of Olympics. He finds out that on this day in 1992, The United States men's Olympic basketball team, known as the "Dream Team" due to its all-star roster of NBA players that featured Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, handily defeated Croatia to win the gold medal at the Barcelona Games.

From the world of Olympics, Larry goes to the world of basketball. He finds out that on this day in 1981, Roger Federer, a Swiss tennis player who became known as one of the sport's best players, was born in Basel, Switzerland.

From the world's of basketball, Larry goes to England. He finds out that on this day in 1963, Armed robbers stole £2,600,000 (mostly in used bank notes) from the Glasgow-London Royal Mail Train near Bridego Bridge, north of London, in what is regarded as the Great Train Robbery.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1901, American physicist Ernest Orlando Lawrence who was the recipient of the 1939 Nobel Prize in Physics for developing the cyclotron, the first particle accelerator capable of achieving high energies was born in Canton, South Dakota, U.S.A.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
