Hive Stock Images: Spinybacked Orb-weaver (Gasteracantha cancriformis)

I dedicate these photos to Hive Stock Images and are free to use by anyone on HIVE.

Some time ago, I discovered a unique spider. I say unique because it is different from other spiders I have ever found. It has a spiny shell on its back.

Based on the information I found, it was Gasteracantha cancriformis or commonly known as the Spinybacked orb-weaver, an orb-weaver spider in the genus Gasteracantha (family Araneidae).

The head is dark black, the shell is bright orange with black spots, six dark black spines, two on the right side, two on the left side, and two on the underside.

Orange legs with black stripes, black abdomen with orange stripes, arranged like stairs. It builds cobwebs between the twigs of a rather low plant. As the habits of other spiders, it is also a predator for insects.
