Plot
The film opens with a series of footage recorded on a personal video camera that the U.S. Department of Defense has found and filed under the name "Cloverfield Case". In this footage we see a boy named Robert "Rob" Hawkins who is about to move to Japan for his job and his friends have thrown him a farewell party on the top floor of a big city building. However, that night they feel a huge tremor and they all go outside to see what is happening. They see something falling from the sky, after seeing a huge explosion, and from the middle of the city appears a huge monster that begins to destroy everything in its path while the rest of the city is filled with horrible creatures from hell, explosions and collapses everywhere and parts of the Statue of Liberty falling from the sky. Rob, along with his partner and his friends try to escape the city while they record everything that is happening around them.

As a horror fan, this movie is a gem, as a suspense and sci-fi fan as well. Even if I were a fan of H.P. Lovecraft I would use this film as a high reference for the incredible monsters that appear. This is without a doubt one of the best films ever made in the genre, especially in the "Found Footage" subgenre. And yes, it's one of the few good horror movies I watched as a kid and never tired of watching it over and over again. The way they build the story with footage recorded on top of footage of a normal trip to Coney Island is something that perfectly blends the realistic with the fictional, giving that weight and value to every moment and event that happens throughout the film. Not to mention the excellent work in production, sound effects, soundtrack, visual effects and CGI that this film has that, despite how old it is, has been maintained quite well, almost as if it were 100% real, really.

Como fanático del terror, esta película es una joya, como fanático del suspenso y de la ciencia ficción también. Incluso si fuera fanático de H.P. Out of nowhere a huge explosion near the Statue of Liberty presents what will be the beginning of the apocalypse itself, as if it were a sign of the end. The city is littered with the remains of the iconic figure where the explosion took place while a massive earthquake, power outages and explosions bring monsters of all sizes. These creatures quickly take over the city, razing everything in their path as young people seek refuge in markets, train stations and in hidden corners of the big city. But this will not be enough, as they are forced to split up and leave their best friends behind in order to survive. As the city turns into chaos, these young people see their lives flash before their eyes with every moment of tension and horror they are living every second.
Before I remember that movies of this style of constantly moving footage make me completely dizzy, I enjoyed this movie a lot as I noticed how they mix horror and suspense with science fiction. What would happen if suddenly the city is attacked by giant monsters? What would you do or where would you go to survive the inevitable? This is what we see throughout this feature film. The very realistic way of acting, reacting and moving is not only noticeable in this cast of actors that participate in this film, but also in the monsters and creatures that appear throughout the film. As if it were a big screen adaptation of a Lovecraft's cosmic horror story, the introduction and presentation of each creature is fantastic and even more so with the realistic footage style of this film. The moments of tension and suspense that the film has is also remarkable for all the above mentioned, conveying very well what anyone would do in a chaotic and apocalyptic situation as what is lived in this story.

Empecemos con la historia, la cual inicia con un grupo de jóvenes adultos neoyorquinos que se ve que están viviendo de lo más contentos con sus vidas, sus planes y sus sueños a futuro. Hasta que en una fiesta, en el momento menos esperado, estos experimentan el mismo horror en carne propia. De la nada una gran explosión cerca de la Estatua de la Libertad presenta lo que será el inicio del mismo apocalipsis, como si de una señal del fin fuera eso. La ciudad se llena de restos de la icónica figura donde fue la explosión mientras que un gran terremoto, apagones y explosiones traen a monstruos de todo tamaño. Estas criaturas se adueñan rápidamente de la ciudad, arrasando todo a su paso mientras los jóvenes buscan refugio en mercados, estaciones de tren y en lugares recónditos de la gran ciudad. Esto es lo que vemos durante todo este largometraje. La forma tan realista de actuar, reaccionar y de moverse no solo se nota en este elenco de actores que participan en esta cinta, sino también en los monstruos y las criaturas que aparecen a lo largo de ella. Como si de una adaptación a la pantalla grande de una historia de terror cósmico de Lovecraft se tratase, la introducción y la presentación de cada criatura es fantástica y más con el estilo de metraje realista que tiene esta cinta. Los momentos de tensión y de suspenso que tiene la película es también destacable por todo lo anteriormente mencionado, transmitiendo muy bien lo que cualquier persona haría en una situación caótica y apocalíptica como lo que se vive en esta historia.

Finally, let's talk about the technical side, which is an excellent job in itself and that can be noticed now after almost 20 years of having been released. Its visual quality, despite being shot by a personal camcorder, is very well detailed, especially when showing us the monsters, which looks pretty good. The visual effects and CGI are 10/10 with details very well done in every shot and scene. Explosions, screams and tremors are also remarkable for how realistic they sound, very good despite the style of footage being handled. The sound effects also stand out quite a bit and even more when we take into account that everything is recorded in a single shot or camera, limiting the view of what is happening around but compensating this very well with very well done background sounds. The soundtrack is another detail to highlight, being an excellence in terms of melody, frequent sounds and percussions that set very well each chaotic scenario we see in this film. Anyway, this is one of the few found footage films I have seen that fascinated me quite a bit. I recommend it 100% to anyone who wants to see something different from the typical horror out there these days.
Personally, I give it a 9.5/10 rating as far as the horror and sci-fi genre goes.

Por último, hablemos del lado técnico, lo cual es un excelente trabajo de por sí y eso se puede notar ahora luego de casi 20 años de haber salido. Su calidad visual, a pesar de haber sido grabada por una videocámara personal, está muy bien detallada, sobre todo al mostrarnos a los monstruos, cosa que se ve bastante bien. Los efectos visuales y el CGI están 10/10 con detalles muy bien hechos en cada plano y escena. Las explosiones, los gritos y los temblores son también destacables por lo realistas que suenan, muy bien a pesar del estilo de metrajes que se está manejando. Los efectos de sonido también resaltan bastante y más cuando tomamos en cuenta que todo se graba en un único plano o cámara, limitando bastante la vista de lo que sucede alrededor pero compensando muy bien esto con sonidos de fondo muy bien hechos. La banda sonora es otro detalle a destacar, al ser una excelencia en cuanto a melodía, sonidos frecuentes y percusiones que ambientan muy bien cada escenario caótico que vemos en esta película. En fin, esta es una de las pocas películas de metraje encontrado que he visto y que me ha fascinado bastante. Lo recomiendo al 100% a todo aquel que quiera ver algo diferente a lo típico de terror que hay actualmente.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de terror y de la ciencia ficción.
