Dune Fever

Originally the much anticipated Dune movie by highly acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve was slated for December 2020; like many other 2020 releases however, the pandemic pushed that release back to this year, and the latest known release date was September 30, 2021. I promised you all to keep you up to date with the news on this subject, so here we go...

The first little tidbit I have to share is that this October release date could be changed to somewhere in September or August. It has to be said though that there's so much uncertainty surrounding the release date as well as the source of this rumor that we have to take this with a grain of salt. It's just that I'm such a Dune-nerd that for me the release can not come soon enough. Having said that, here are the necessary side-notes: for one, the news of the August and September release dates are from unofficial Dune Twitter accounts and were related to release dates in France and Australia specifically. This is suspect because there's no real reason for having separate release dates in the era of the internet: when a movie is out, it's out. Although it could have something to do with theater-only releases in those countries, with the international streaming release to follow on October first. And second, I don't want them to release the movie at a moment that would hurt in any way the profitability, the box-office numbers. And I know too little about how money is made through streaming services to judge if the release date influences profits at all or by how much. Bottom line is that this first Dune movie has to perform well enough as to justify the making and release of a second movie. If you don't know yet, Villeneuve has only planned to tell the story of the first Dune novel, and to do it right he said from the beginning that one 2.5 hour movie isn't enough to do the story justice. I love that decision and I agree 100 percent as the story and the Dune universe are massive. So to see the entire first novel, we need that second movie.

Dune 2021 May Receive Early International Release!

The second piece of news is even more exiting. Two individuals who were present at seen test-screenings of the film have been interviewed and given their review of sorts. One gave it a 9/10 score and the other a 10/10 score! I know, it's just two persons, but the way they describe their experiences just seem to agree with the experiences people had with the other Denis Villeneuve SF movies: Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival. Also, both individuals had high praise for the performances of Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho and Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides. Only one of the two, the one that gave a 9/10 rating, had a complaint, which was that at times there was too much information given in scenes, however that person did reaffirm that it did not ruin their enjoyment of the film. Just watch the below linked video about these "reviews"; it made my Dune fever go up a few degrees. And, as always when I discuss this upcoming movie, I remind you that there's still time to read the book or books before the film is released; I recommend any "Dune newby" to do so.
