UN-Decorating the Stagg Dreadnought

If youve been checking out @rorykl at all, youve most likely seen the Stagg Dreadnought…even though i never introduced it here in the Instrument Porn community.

Well, I dont know what came over me, but today I just decided - all of a sudden - that I wanted to get all my old decoration off of it. I started the process, not sure how it would pan out, but figuring one way or another I can make it work in the end. The main question was whether or not the guitar would keep its original finish.

I started by peeling off the tie dye, which of course left an ugly residue of spray adhesive.

I had forgotten this was there, so i was honestly surprised when I peeled off the cloth and found a WILDCATS decal underneath. When I saw it, I remembered that I got this guitar from the used section at Frankfurt’s Cream Music, and it had come with this decal already applied.

The cardboard Irish Tea box was the worst part, this required stripper and a putty knife to remove, but with some patience I was able to get it cleared off.

I’ll be coming back through at aome point to get the sides and redo the face, but I’m going to give it a chance to air out so I don’t risk destroying thr finish…which so far appears to be holding up very well against the abrasove chemicals and scrubbing!

You can still see the outline of the tea box, im not sure if ill ever get that all the way cleaned up - but I’m excited to see this guitar in a new light, it feels like a new guitar already, even with a little restoration still to be done :)

EDIT:
On further inspection, it looks like that stupid rectangle will stay until I sand down the finish and top layers…which I may very well never do.

From the clues I see here, I’m guessing I glued down the box in rough form and then cut it in place with a razor blade, so either glue or stripper or something else over the years was able to seep in through the cut lines and stain the wood beneath the finish.

This is still fixable, but probably more of a project than I’m ready to take on right now.

Thanks for checking out some more of my work! As always, I hope you enjoyed witnessing as much as I enjoyed creating!

Here you’ll find links to various post-groupings, so you can find all posts related to a specific topic quickly. Topics include lists of brewing recipes, flutes, crypto talks, rucking posts and an index of all acoustic covers. The lists are updated as new content is added, so they can always be used to quickly navigate my content.

@albuslucimus has officially hard-forked. @rorykl is now the home for pretty much all acoustic singer/songwriter work.

I created a second account (@rorykl) in May 2023 to be my professional side. It’s a totally separate thing, strictly acoustic playing and singing. Because I don’t want to post duplicate material from two accounts, this account is now the home for all my acoustic singer/songwriter type stuff.

I’ll be using this as my account to share with bars and venues etc., so it will be a home for acoustic covers, live performances and auditions…pretty much, if I’m playing a stringed instrument amd singing, this is where I’ll be doing it…unless I’m doing it while operating a motor vehicle ;)
