Playing Quena to the Sounds of Mother Dimension

These are all the videos of me playing along with Mother Dimension. HERE is a link to the album on Spotify - it’s really worth listening to.

This album was also the AZL Daily Soundtrack for March 30, 2022.

A good friend of mine is in the band, so I’ll admit I’ve got a bias, but give them listen and decide for yourself - I think these guys are incredible.

The more I listen to the album, the more I want to listen to it…more. These guys do an amazing job of fusing elements of hard rock, jazz and funk, perhaps among others. The lyrics are tastefully crafted and contain nuanced metrics, bouncing in and out of the cracks between percussive peaks with surgical expertise. Underlying it all of course, the percussion is choice - the way this guy dodges in and out of the foreground all while holding down the framework is masterful. Bass licks show up in places that catch you by surprise and make you think at the same time, there’s no way this could have been without it - drawing your attention inward, allowing you to see the artisan scaffolding continuously being erected by that spinal bass.

The album is one incredible melody after another, each loaded with great breakdowns and interludes, all stacked on top of rhythms that take hold of your whole body. One of the things that amazes me the most is how these guys aren’t scared to leave a good thing behind and see what lies beyond the corner - time and time again, like veteran acoustinauts, willing forever to press on to further horizons. You can tell in these compositions, that their creators really wanted to take it to eleven. What I mean to say, is you could lay down a couple good verses, break ‘em up with a catchy chorus, garnish with a simple breakdown and/or lead part and be done with it - but these guys throw in one skillful measure after another, always bravely charging into new territory with the tenacity of proud warriors on the battlefield.

This self-titled offering, from Mother Dimension, overall has such a strong sense of balance across the various instruments; you really feel the cohesion these guys have - these songs are tight.

I’ve had a blast playing my flute along with this album. I’m hoping to extend this out, closing on a third wave
(
1. Improvisations (trying to play along, with no prior knowledge),
2. Rehearsals (practicing after a few runs, with a general idea for at least some parts),
3. Performances (Playing along, fluent, tight and clean).
)
and, if I’m lucky, maybe I’ll get to add a bonus table with videos if I ever get to play with the band :)

Because of the unfolding nature of this one, this page will be updated as new videos are scheduled/released. It’s gonna be cool though, and hopefully we’ll see a learning process in real time. Check back once in a while, or let me know if you’d like to be added to the update mentions list!
