Index4INDEX Card 191: Chris Evert 1

Competitive toughness is an acquired skill and not an inherited gift.

-- Chris Evert

About the Quote

Even Superman was a soft baby when he fled Krypton to go to Earth. As he grew older, he became physically stronger-- not just because of the yellow light from Earth's sun, but also because of the labor and exercises and strength training he did as the adopted son of Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Sarah Connor was just shallow and frivolous big-haired young woman before The Terminator entered her life. Because of the world in which her son John was going to live, she had to become tougher and stronger. She also had to acquire skills she would never have obtained otherwise. By the time John Connor rescues his mother from the mental institution holding her, Sarah Connor had transformed into a living piece of iron.

Before college, Michael Jordan was just some player. By the time he won his first Olympic gold medal, he was becoming the "Michael Jordan" we know. When he won his first of six NBA Championships, he had transformed into MICHAEL JORDAN.

Toughness is a trait which can be developed by many means, and it takes work and effort to become tough. Overcoming stress is part of developing not only physical toughness but also mental toughness. Talent can win many games, but talent combined with toughness wins championships.
