Car-Fluting 002 - FotM Dec 2021 (2 parts) - Rain Spirit Bass Flute

Nothing fancy, but join me on my way to work. Over these two videos, we’ll talk flutes and music, and I’ll address one of the nuances I’ve consistently found in switching between bass and standard Native American flutes. (Written out with some tab images as well, below the embedded videos :)

PART 1 PART 2

Mostly, these videos are just focused on general conversation, but as mentioned above, switching to the bass NAF for December brought my awareness to what looks to be a consistent nuance between bass vs. standard NAF. For anyone getting started with the NAF, I tabbed this up to make the distinction clearer. The basic NAF scale (I think it’s pentatonic minor but I’m not sure, so I just call it the basic scale) is the same for both standard and bass NAFs, but as you move into the extended range(1), the two flutes seem to have unique characteristics.

(1) Extended range refers to two notes above the standard range. The addition of these two notes has a significant impact on the melodies you can create on the NAF.

As for the December FotM, the Rain Spirit bass flute, I’m just getting started in learning the subtleties of this one. I’ll post another performance video towards the end of the month, hopefully showing some progress in my technique, but no guarantees. :)
