Dark, totally encompassing dark night in the woods I am screaming for someone to answer, “is anyone there, is anyone there!” I keep screaming. The trees swaying in the breeze looks like they are closing in on me then it begins to rain, I get wet and it’s freezing, I hear a voice saying it is time to awaken Kate they need you .
I wake up with a jolt totally drenched in sweat, everyday its always the same dream, and it’s raining it is always raining. What does it even mean I ponder, who needs me, this is getting frustrating I think to myself I need to meet with a seer. I call Judy my friend that fancies palm reading and fortune tellers to book me a session with one after I narrated my dreams to her.
I leave my room wearing my favorite cotton pjs and floppy eared slippers to find that the house has been decorated with balloons and my mum and little sister are in my face with a cake asking me to blow and make a wish. Shoot I forgot today’s my birthday, I finally turn 18 and legal, I feel all giddy and excited and quickly blow out the candles making a quick silent wish.
“Happy birthday sweetie” my mum says and I notice she’s wearing the necklace with the bird like pendant on it somehow it feels awfully familiar, I get out of my head and reply “thanks mum” .
“So mum, this night I will be attending the slumber party at Judy’s place”. “Sure thing and don’t forget to call when you get there, so I know your safe” mum says.
I get through the day with my family eating and sharing fun memories and then I glance at the clock it’s four minutes past 5, gotta get ready for my slumber party which is actually me meeting the psyche fortune teller. I excuse myself and I go to my room to grab my red pattern bag pack and I am off.
I get to Judy’s place and knock like about three times before I hear her loud voice screaming “I’m coming”, I sigh and wait a few seconds before she’s tumbling down the stairs and holding the door open for me. Judy is looking all dressed up like she’s going somewhere when we scheduled the meeting to be at her house since her parents are out of town tonight.
“Judy why are you dressed like that?” , “duh, we are having a guest that’s enough reason to be dressed. Now let’s sit and wait it’s almost 7 she should be here any minute”
We wait in the sitting room while munching on some cookies and juice while my mind wanders on what this night would bring, there is a knock and I stand to go open it. I see a lady that might be in her early thirties with curly black locs, eyes the color of emerald and chocolate colored skin. She looked so stunning and I was awe stuck for a moment. I invite her in and we begin our session, after narrating my whole experience she gives me this knowing smile and says she has to perform a soul-spirit opening. Judy gives me a puzzled look but I ask her to go ahead. She begins chanting in a strange language that sounded awfully familiar, like the voices i hear. While she’s chanting she brings a green looking stone from her bag and touches lightly on my forehead, I feel light headed and I think I fainted because when i woke she was no longer there and Judy looked scared to death, when she notices I am awake and staring she says “you scared me” I could hear the worry in her voice “I am fine Ju, I feel ok, where is the lady?”
“She left and told me to tell you that you’ve been unlocked, I honestly don’t know what that means but I guess you are about to experience something”.
We spend the rest of the night chatting and watching movies. Then I fall asleep, this night I don’t dream, it’s just silent. I leave Judy’s house the next day thinking that phase is over until I bump into a kid with weird colored eyes I haven’t seen around before, I shrug it off and continue my walk home. When I get home I hear my mum’s voice from the kitchen “back home already Kate”. “Yes mum” I say and stroll to the kitchen, when she turns around she gasps and I am wondering what must have shocked her when she says “Where have you been?, what have you done? your eyes are having the faintest green tinged with blue, that is the mark of the shadow queen, there hasn’t been one for over ten thousand years” I look at her totally bewildered and she begins to explain that we come from a long line of shadow people that keeps the balance and over a while now the Kingdom has been disturbed and might soon fall prey to attackers if no queen ascends the throne, that she has been keeping the pendant of the queen all this while hoping that one day she would meet the queen and now the day has finally come her own daughter is the queen. She hands me the pendant and suddenly there is this glow in the eyes of the bird and she bows. My mom bows and I have been shocked more times today than in my entire life. She explains to me how I would now be able to see the shadow world.
Great I think to myself, what a thing my turning 18 will bring, me a shadow queen, ruling and keeping the peace probably soon to fall in love with the attackers prince or king I’m sure. I am so out of my comfort zone here, I roll my eyes.
