Juaquin, a sailor with 40 years of experience, for the first time in his life had felt fear of being shipwrecked and dying. Inside the boat, Ester, his granddaughter, was inside the boat, she was covering her ears with great strength, hoping that all that would disappear and she would return home with her parents.

It was 8:00 a.m. Juaquin was very excited, he never took a day off from work, but that day was really important, he put on his best clothes and groomed his beard, he wanted to look presentable for the occasion. He took money from his savings, bought a bouquet of flowers and paid for a cab to the hospital, that day the sun was shining, a great day for fishing, but also a great day to welcome a little member of the family into the world.

Months ago his son Juan had given him the news, it would be a boy and Juaquin could not help but imagine himself teaching his new grandson to sail, he had many plans and dreams, what he had not been able to achieve with his children, he wished to achieve with his new grandson, that he would love the ocean as much as he did, that he would become an excellent navigator and thus be able to die peacefully, knowing that someone would take care of everything he had worked on all his life.

The road was long, about two hours away from the port where he lived, but when he arrived he walked quickly to the waiting room, wishing he had arrived on time, when he entered he looked at his son Juan biting his nails, waiting uneasily for everything to go well during the delivery, Juaquin gave him a smile and told him to calm her down, that everything was going to be fine. The wait took forever, it was a 1 hour procedure, however, 3 hours passed and still no news from Mariela and the baby.

Both Juan and Juaquin began to worry and asked the nurses what was going on, but they received no answer. It was getting dark and between the cold and the fear, they were desperate and praying that nothing bad had happened. At around 10:00 pm one of the doctors came out and walked slowly towards them, Juaquin understood by the look on his face that he was bringing bad news, but he stood up bravely to support his son.

– There were complications, but Mariela and the baby were fine.

Both were perplexed, it was a girl and although a bit of disappointment lodged in Juaquin's heart, he could only rejoice that everyone was safe. Plans had changed, he couldn't teach a little girl to sail or fish and he thought she probably didn't want to spend time with an old man like him either, but he kept silent and waited for the moment to go to greet his granddaughter and to congratulate his daughter-in-law.

When he entered, he saw a sweet little baby girl with big and bright eyes and forgot everything he had been thinking, he took her in his arms after Juan and felt something he had not felt in a long time and the need to protect her no matter what. He accompanied his son, daughter-in-law and new granddaughter home and spent a few days with them to help them, after all, he had the most experience taking care of babies.

After a few days, he went home, returned to his job and missed Ester, his granddaughter, every day. Mariela, when she turned one, started taking her to visit every weekend, wanting her to spend time with her grandfather, although Juan thought she was too cranky to want to be with her. Juaquin would feed them and always took them for a walk by the sea for a while, it was his way of telling them that he loved them very much.

Time passed and Ester grew older, she was now 5 years old, old enough to spend a couple of days with her grandfather, Juaquin was excited, he liked spending time with her and he knew she did too. Ester loved her grandfather and even though he wasn't that affectionate, she didn't mind, she loved the sea and listening to his stories of adventure, which all turned out to be true.

Those days there were rains and Ester felt sad for not being able to go out with her grandfather to sail, he could not bear to see her like that, so even though the sky was gray and a storm was coming, but Juaquin thought he would make it back in time before it started, he would only sail for a few minutes to brighten up his grandson's afternoon. But the raging sea would not let them return, he sent Ester into the boat and wished he had never left home with her.

Fear invaded her being when she saw the waves coming with force towards her boat, she never thought she would feel anger towards the sea, but this time it threatened to hurt someone she loved with all her being, her beloved granddaughter Ester. One of the waves knocked hard on the door and hit his head with force, making him fall fainted to the ground. When he awoke he was on the seashore, in the distance he saw his wrecked boat and Ester was nowhere to be seen.

Dying Juaquin stood up and shouted her name, but she was nowhere to be seen, he feared the worst and threw himself breathlessly to the ground. But suddenly he felt a soft touch on his shoulder.

– Grandfather, you woke up.

Ester, seeing her grandfather "asleep" on the floor of the boat, took the rudder and moved it to one side and to the other, she did not know what she was doing, but she repeated what her grandfather always did, although the boat hit some rocks, both Ester and Juaquin reached the shore safely. At that moment Juaquin felt a great relief and joy to see his granddaughter Ester, some time later Juaquin was able to buy a new boat and teach his granddaughter to sail it like him, but always avoiding the slightest rain.
