The Missing Register - Creative Nonfiction Prompt #25

Searching for an important document without result can be so devastating. Sometimes, due to how important a document is to us, we might be tensed while searching for it. You may not be all that relaxed and coordinated within the searching period, but you will find out that when you are more calm, achieving results becomes faster, or perhaps you will mostly find whatever is out of reach when and where you least expect it after some days.

I was hired for a 3-day sales program by a staff member in one of the leading oil and gas industries in Nigeria one week ago. The company gave some employees the opportunity to showcase their products to their entire staff and the invited guests for the program. The staff (my boss) that hired me for the exercise had lots of nice products that many people needed, but because he couldn't bring the products physically to the event, he requested that I write down all the visitors details that visited our stand and indicated interest after watching the product slides in our projector and going through our brochure.

I was wowed by the number of people that really wanted these products in their homes, and they were willingly dropping their names, phone numbers, and email addresses in the register provided. My boss was excited about the turnout, and he reached out to the manufacturer outside the country to request that a particular number of the products be shipped to Nigeria. We already have lots of orders in the register. Clients were dropping their details along with the types of products they wanted. After the third day, I packed everything inside the box provided, including the brochure and the register; I thought 💭. I also had a laptop in the bag, which I carried along; however, my boss requested that I take the whole brochure and register at home, compile all the details, and send them to his email address.

Coming home after the program, I was exhausted. I kept procrastinating to compile the client's request and save it online until my boss called and requested that urgently; he had said it before and expected an action from me. Then I opened the box to bring out the register and begin my compilation, but the register was missing. I thought I wasn't searching it well, so I poured the whole brochure on the ground, all to no avail. But this register is always in this box; what changed? Where could it be? What will I tell Mr. Andrew about this missing register? Mr. Andrew had spent a lot of money on the program and wouldn't want to hear any negative stories of any sort. I searched many places I could think of with so much tension, knowing how important the register is to my boss. I was lost in thought at one point. This register contains so much information needed for the next stage of the sale, my mind didn't even reach to check it in the laptop bag all along. I was so devastated and felt incompetent toward my boss.

After two days, I needed to use the laptop for a Zoom meeting. As I removed the laptop from the bag, I felt a hard object in another compartment of the bag. I checked, and it was the register book. I may have unknowingly placed it there and do not remember. At this point, I was so much relieved; the missing visitors' register was found, and I quickly compiled every detail inside the register and forwarded them to my boss's email address. I learned to avoid procrastination, especially on important issues, and to always keep important details online where they could be retrieved at any point in time.
