The Request

"Don't worry about the future, there lots of things to worry about, take it from me", Mike said to Philip.

Philip was a volunteer at the local nursing home where he met Mike, an old man full of life for his age. They were both broken so the connection was instant.

"What is going to happen is going to happen even with all the planning in the world", he said coughing and staring into a large pizza box on the table.

"I wasn't worrying about the future you old man, I asked what you wanted to eat for dinner, stop playing smart".

"You know I used to be a comedian in my days, oh how the ladies loved me but now, nobody likes a good joke"

"What do you mean? Mrs. Jerkins seems to like you".

"Leave Mrs. Jerkins, she's just warming up to me because she knows I have pudding privileges".

"Maybe, or maybe you're just being paranoid. You should talk to her, get to know her a little".

"You youths and thinking everything can be done with talking".

"Can you blame us? I still need you to tell me what you want to eat for dinner".

"See, this is why I like you, you always look out for me even when I'm being difficult".

"I don't have a choice, I'm a volunteer here. I picked Mrs. Jerkins but nobody wanted you and I was the only one left".

"It's because they're intimidated by my amazing physique".

"That's not true" Philip said laughing, "you can barely even stand up after a meal".

Mike liked Philip and he rarely liked people. Most of the people who had volunteered to help him at the nursing home quit after a day because of how difficult he was but there was just something about Philip, something he couldn't explain.

"Please make sure my daughter gets all the letters after I'm gone"

"Stop talking like you're dying, you're just going to bed"

"Have a sense of humor"

"You always do things like this, it's like you're really trying to convince me about being a comedian"

"What? You spend 3 months with me and suddenly you know me?"

"Yes, that's exactly what it means. Hey Mike, can I ask you a question?"

"You just did but okay"

"I notice your daughter doesn't come to see you or even writes you back"

"She's really busy with her work and the kids, I'm even lucky she calls sometimes"

"That sounds sad"

"When you get to live as old as I am, you tend to learn your favorite people might not have the time to spend with you always and that's okay. Now enough with the questions, go steal me some chicken from the lobby"

"I want to leave you something before I go".

"You don't need to leave me anything, it's okay".

"I wasn't talking about an inheritance. Grab my phone. I don't have much time again. Could you do me a favour after I'm gone?"

"Sure, anything"

"My password to me social media accounts are in a file, could you help me write something to scare people?"

Philip laughed at the request, this was the sort of thing you'd expect from Mike. He must have been troublesome in his prime.

"Sure, why not"

It's been three months since Mike died. Those lovely moments spent with him were very insightful for Philip, Mike was a jolly old man. He missed his friend. He pulled out Mike's phone to fulfill the request he made. Smiling down at Mike's phone, he made a post on his Twitter page,

Boo!!, I can see all of you.

Mike would be so proud.
