I thought of writing about why I love my country, Nigeria and the funny aspect of my country got to me once again. Just yesterday, I was laughing without control over the recent jokes spreading around my country about a woman's image used to condemn a lot of things done in my country.

It's so amazing how Nigerians find ways to make jokes from every situations, that is what I do love most about Nigeria and I'm so proud to be one of them.

So for the purpose of this contest and with the mind of sharing why I love my country, I'll share some funny beliefs in my country that I found myself growing up to meet and even believe some of them 😂

Itchy palms are said to be a sign of good luck

I remember a time when I didn't know about this belief and was so busy scratching my palm so hard because it was itching me badly. Then my younger sister was like "Na big money dey come so" 😂 I was surprised she knew about that belief even before I did.

Nigerians believe that an itchy palm is a sign that you will have a huge amount of money and let me confess here, I've purposely scratched my palms when I needed money 🤣 it didn't work for me though.

Crossing others legs has a bad meaning

It is said that if you cross over a pregnant woman's legs, she will give birth to a child that looks like you. I've seen a person cross a pregnant woman's legs by mistake and is asked to cross back to avoid what would happen especially if the person is ugly or has a bad attitude 😂

Another version of this belief is that you shouldn't let anyone cross over your legs whether you're pregnant or not, if not you will give birth to a child with one arm or leg in the future. This is one of the beliefs I don't believe at all but I find myself avoiding such situation 🤣

Seeing ghosts when you peer through your legs in the market place

A few weeks back, my friend told me of woman who ran mad in the market place because it was said that she saw ghosts in the market when she mistakenly peered through her legs.

The common warning is not to bend over to peer through between your legs, especially in crowded places like markets. One is bound to see ghosts and witches that way. This belief is a kinda scary one so even if one doesn't believe it, it's still wise not to experiment it.

Devil eats food that falls on the ground, don't pick it

As a child then, I believed this a lot. I always cry over my food that fell to the ground but I never tried picking it up to eat again because of what they made me belief.

But as I grew up, I asked a question to my dad "What if na better expensive food you wan chop fall for ground?" and my dad was like "Abeg, all those ones na talk... Chop your food from ground so far nor chop sand" 😂 I laughed hard when I realized they were telling me those beliefs so I don't eat just from any ground my food falls on when I was a child.

Sleeping face up is a bad sleeping position

It is believed that sleeping face up is the best position for evil spirits to have access to your body and soul. Because of this, you see parents adjusting their children to a better position while sleeping.

Some even say sleeping face up will also make the person snore louder so it is always advised to sleep with sides or face down. Dad made my siblings and I believe this and we make sure to change our sleeping positions whenever... So you could say I somehow believe in this superstition.

Sneezing means someone is calling out your name somewhere

This belief is a really funny one because I remember I tried this a lot of time showing that it was an interesting belief to me. I'll be like "Make I see whether daddy go sneeze if I call am for my mind" 😂

So whenever a person sneezes, he or she will be like "Who dey call me na?" and sneezing becomes an avenue to say someone is gossiping or missing the person sneezing.

If you swallow a seed, it will germinate in your stomach

Haba! I was so surprised when I first heard of this belief, how can a seed germinate in the person's stomach? 😂 And honestly, I didn't believe it but I made sure to vomit any seed of fruit I mistakenly take in.

I remember hearing a child saying that he would soon have a big orange tree in his body because he swallowed an orange seed 😂 You can imagine the height of his believe on that superstition.

If you pick money on the floor you will turn into a tuber of yam

Even with this belief, people still pick up money from the floor. We've heard of people turning into a tuber of yam after picking money from the floor but I don't believe if it's true.

There are so many other funny beliefs of my country, Nigeria and I will like to end my life my post with what @shemzy said in a post titled Stereotyping Africans

Every country has its worst people and also good ones. You may not truly understand people until you live among them

This is my entry for the Dcc Contest you can participate also
