STREET ART #146 – Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay)

01.JPG

Colonia del Sacramento is small town, located by Rio de la Plata in Uruguay. But even it's small, it's wellknown because of the old historic quarter, now a UNESCO Wold Heritage Site. Because of the historic part of town, Colonia sees lots of tourists. It’s not big, but it’s loaded with old colonial architecture. Because it's located only 50 kilometers from Buenos Aires, it makes an easy day trip from here. In January, when I was here, I came here to visit the old town. What I didn't expect was to see beautiful street art.

The old historical part of town is characterized by its old lighthouse, which is built on the remains of a monastery. Since the houses in the old town are only one storey buildings, you can see the lighthouse wherever you are. Both the lighthouse and the drawbridge into town, are included in the mural. By the mural there is a board sayin that the mural is 12x4 meters and created by professer Darido Ingold and students of the Plastic Arts Workshop in the House of Culture of Colonia in tribute to the city of Colonia del Sacramento.

These were also found somewhere between the harbour and the main street. We did see a couple of other quite good murals, but they were both in such a bad shape that many of the details were missing.

Only a few minutes later we pass this beautiful mural. It’s huge, covering the intire wall. To me, it seems as the whole scene conveys tranquility. It feels calm and peacefull. The girl is lying there in the grass reading a book. She has animals around her. One that lives in water, one in the air and one on land. A small world without worries. A beautiful mural. The last photo is the name of the artist. Only I haven't been able to find out anything about him or her.

This is not exactly street art, but it is art. Painted tiles like these are found many places all over town. The first is an old map painted on tiles, that shows what the city looked like in the year 1762. The other one shows a much larger area of the Rio de la Plata.

This is also very nice and so delicate. Since Uruguay has been influenced by both Portugal and Spain, this is possibly a tradition that comes from Portugal. It's nice to study these old maps and pictures too. I actually regret not taken more photos of these works on tiles.

Half a day / one day is enough to visit the old quarter. The town is easy walkable. But because we had two whole days we didn’t just stay in the old town. We walked the main streets and some side street. That turned out to be a good idea.
