The Great Yeast Experiment: Introduction

I’ve had this idea for a while, but to do it without recording it felt always like a lot of work that would end up with lost or forgotten outcomes. But HIVE has inspired me since I can put the results up and keep them forever, so I’m going to to it!

Here’s the idea: A brewing experiment where many different yeasts, from grocery store bread yeast to wine and maybe even English cider yeast(!) will be cold pitched in separate bottles at the same time. I don’t usually do TA on my brews, but for this experiment we will be taking gravity measurements at the start and finish to compare alcohol content quantitatively. Flavor and clarity will also be reviewed.

21 JAN 2022:
Currently I am collecting materials. I’ve got most of the yeasts now. I need to get English cider yeast, maybe an ale yeast, and maybe about 7 bottles of juice…probably apple or lemonade…

I got two types of bread yeast from two different brands, Fleischmann’s and Red Star

The Red Star brand is a go to for me already, they sell wine and champagne (maybe more) yeasts online for way less than anyone else. So far I’ve had good luck with them. (The ones on the right ended up being three-packs, in case you’re curious about the price discrepancy.)

Other yeasts I’m thinking about:

Another cider yeast, with a better price.

Wine yeast is my usual “go-to,” so I’ll definitely be doing a batch with this.

This pack is about $25 and would double the number of simultaneous fermentations going, so I’ll probably end up passing, but it could be a cool way to jump start a second round of yeast experiments!

This yeast looks cool, but at $16 for a single shot, it’s too rich for my blood.

Once I finish buying yeasts I’ll put up a post listing what yeast we’ve settled on for the experiment, and we’ll go from there!

Use my Coinbase referral link to get started with Coinbase! I’ll get $10 in Bitcoin but, more importantly, you will get $10 in Bitcoin too!

Here is a post I did recently about using Coinbase with HiveWallet to get Hive in the US. If you’re wanting to buy Hive and are having difficulties, this may be helpful for you!
