“Flight 3745 to Augusta is now boarding,” The intercom spoke.

The girls looked at each other with wide eyes. Dyan zipped out of the bathroom and began speed walking over to her gate, where she saw everyone standing up and heading in line. Maya jogged after her.

“Yeah, but besides the blue hair, Dyan! Think about it! She was an orphan running away from the authorities, found a big alien family willing to take her in, faced a ferocious half-bear half-dog, made her bullies cry, and saved her family from danger. Most of the things she’s done in the book you did, Dyan.”

Dyan shook her head. “I’m not Spirit, Maya! Believe me, I’m not!

“No, you believe me! You are!”

“Maya! Dyan! I was getting worried about y’all. Your flight’s boarding.” Mr. Blue nodded to the line where everyone was lining up to get on board the plane.

Maya grew silent again, looking the opposite direction of her father.

Dyan nodded. “Goodbye Mr. Blue.”

“Goodbye, Dyan. Take care.” Mr. Blue’s eyes shifted beyond her.

Dyan waved goodbye to Maya, who noticed it out of the corner of her eye and waved back.

“Bye Maya.”

“Bye, Dyan.”

Then Dyan couldn’t help it. She hugged Maya, so quick and fast Maya’s hands were still crossed even as she hugged her.

Maya soon freed her crossed hands and squeezed Dyan back, and they hugged for a good moment that wasn’t long enough for Mr. Blue to say anything, but not short enough that it wouldn’t become a memory.

“Don’t worry,” Maya whispered so quietly Dyan could only hear vowels. Maya whispered more, which sounded like, “Will meet a gin soon.”

“What?” Dyan pushed away from Maya and stared at her.

Maya put up her hands and shook her head rigidly with wide eyes. When Mr. Blue turned to her, she smiled and said, “Nothing. Goodbye, Dyan!”

Dyan smiled, did one deep nod and towed her suitcase over to the jet bridge. Besides the hug memory, Dyan had kept the sketch Maya had made of Spirit to prove she hadn’t imagined all this. To prove the Blue family had been real.
