Children are very interesting beings. People underestimate them many times, they are classified as humans without knowledge that we need to fill with content. I never saw them this way. I prefer many times a child who is curious and asks about anything compared to a child who doesn't question and accepts what we say is correct. While I was a Biology teacher in a public high school in Rio de Janeiro, my happiest moments were when the children questioned something that I said. I was a teacher helping them to understand that subject but not the truth owner.
The questions in my class were rare. Teenagers usually find it difficult to bring attention to the class essentially they are grown-up kids almost turning into adults. So most of them are already formatted as what society wants. But the questions came once in a while, some of them interesting ones that I had to research before answering. The simple question of why, or give me fundaments to believe in a specific topic is very important to create a person's identity.
As a teacher, I saw each student for a maximum of 3 years, between the 10th and 12th grades. However, with my kids, I am having the interesting opportunity to practice what I was incentivizing in class since their lives started. Maybe I created a monster. Just kidding, is a monster in a good way I believe. my oldest daughter just completed 7 years and her ability to question things and even to create hypotheses can scare many adults. Last year, she got an interesting present, a paleontologist kit to play with, including a block of clay that had a supposed dinosaur tooth or nail inside. The kit has some tools to excavate this "fossil" out of it. I was very curious to play with her with that new "toy".
However, my wife decided to play with her when I had a business trip, they started but when I got home I saw that they lost the excavation tools (which I don't know what was to replace them because I never saw it). They didn't finished to excavate the fossil and the clay block remained partially done for months. Not a while ago my daughter tried something that created two different impressions in the house. I heard my wife screaming upstairs and getting angry downstairs. I went upstairs to check it.
The playroom was all dirty with mud. I asked my daughter who was crying what happened. She said that she wanted to see what was going to happen when she uses water in the clay in order to see if it could help remove the fossil. And the water mixed with the clay softened it and she could remove the fossil. She told me as well that my wife (her mom) got angry because of the mess. I hugged her and told her that she was very clever to try that. She just made a scientific experiment by herself with a hypothesis and test to prove it. I told her that I was very proud of her and to continue like that.
Every day I hear new questions about the other things that happen around me, of course, sometimes times are exaggerated like asking why the neighborhood had lots of wood planks in front of their house. I told her that maybe they were building something inside. She asked me "what?", I told her that there are some answers that are difficult to get specially when we need to cross the privacy of the others. But still, I love that she is building an independent analysis brain that wants to understand everything that is surrounding her and that even their parents aren't owners of the natural truth.
As crianças são seres muito interessantes. As pessoas as subestimam muitas vezes, as classificam como humanos sem conhecimento que precisamos preencher com conteúdo. Eu nunca as vi dessa maneira. Prefiro muitas vezes uma criança curiosa que pergunta sobre qualquer coisa em comparação com uma criança que não questiona e aceita o que dizemos ser correto. Enquanto eu era professor de Biologia em uma escola pública no Rio de Janeiro, meus momentos mais felizes eram quando as crianças questionavam algo que eu dizia. Eu era um professor ajudando-os a entender aquele assunto, mas não o proprietário da verdade.
As perguntas em minha aula eram raras. Os adolescentes geralmente acham difícil prestar atenção na aula, essencialmente são crianças crescidas quase se tornando adultos. Então, a maioria deles já está formatada como o que a sociedade quer. Mas as perguntas vinham de vez em quando, algumas delas interessantes que eu tinha que pesquisar antes de responder. A simples pergunta "por quê?" ou "me dê fundamentos para acreditar em um tópico específico" é muito importante para criar a identidade de uma pessoa.
Como professor, vi cada aluno por um máximo de 3 anos, entre o 10º e o 12º ano. No entanto, com meus filhos, estou tendo a oportunidade interessante de praticar o que estava incentivando em sala de aula desde que suas vidas começaram. Talvez eu tenha criado um monstro. Brincadeira, é um monstro de uma maneira boa, eu acredito. Minha filha mais velha acabou de completar 7 anos e sua capacidade de questionar coisas e até de criar hipóteses pode assustar muitos adultos. No ano passado, ela ganhou um presente interessante, um kit de paleontólogo para brincar, incluindo um bloco de argila que tinha um suposto dente ou unha de dinossauro dentro. O kit tem algumas ferramentas para escavar esse "fóssil" de dentro dele. Eu estava muito curioso para brincar com ela com esse novo "brinquedo".
No entanto, minha esposa decidiu brincar com ela quando eu estava em uma viagem de negócios, elas começaram, mas quando cheguei em casa vi que perderam as ferramentas de escavação (que eu não sei o que era para substituí-las porque nunca vi). Elas não terminaram de escavar o fóssil e o bloco de argila permaneceu parcialmente feito por meses. Não faz muito tempo, minha filha tentou algo que criou duas impressões diferentes na casa. Ouvi minha esposa gritando lá em cima e ficando brava lá embaixo. Fui lá em cima verificar.
A sala de jogos estava toda suja de lama. Perguntei para minha filha, que estava chorando, o que aconteceu. Ela disse que queria ver o que aconteceria quando usasse água na argila para ver se poderia ajudar a remover o fóssil. E a água misturada com a argila a amoleceu e ela conseguiu remover o fóssil. Ela me contou também que minha esposa (sua mãe) ficou brava por causa da bagunça. Eu a abracei e disse que ela foi muito inteligente em tentar isso. Ela acabou de fazer um experimento científico por conta própria com uma hipótese e teste para prová-la. Disse a ela que estava muito orgulhoso dela e para continuar assim.
Todos os dias ouço novas perguntas sobre as outras coisas que acontecem ao meu redor, é claro, às vezes são exageradas, como perguntar por que o vizinho tinha muitas tábuas de madeira na frente da casa. Disse a ela que talvez estivessem construindo algo lá dentro. Ela me perguntou "o quê?", eu disse a ela que há algumas respostas que são difíceis de obter, especialmente quando precisamos cruzar a privacidade dos outros. Mas ainda assim, adoro que ela esteja construindo um cérebro de análise independente que queira entender tudo o que está ao seu redor e que até mesmo seus pais não sejam donos da verdade natural.
