School in Alberta is interesting for school students but not so interesting for parents. Kids have days at home when it is regular work days for parents. Of course, we have holidays in common called statutory holidays but still many other days that I can’t spend with my kids at home to do other activities unless I take my paid vacation days at work which I have a total of 15 days per year. It is tough because kids want to spend their days off with their parents and most of the time it is impossible for that. We hear parents complaining a lot about that and in most cases, parents decide to put their kids in daycare programs or summer camps during the summer.
Three times during the year we need to think about what to do with the kids that they don’t have school. During February we have the reading week and in April we have the spring break. Both times the kids spend a whole week at home. If we can, we can take also a week of vacation and travel somewhere but it is impossible during a year to spend both with them. In addition to that summer vacations start at the end of June and up to begining of September. So 2 months at least, kids stay at home. Also, I am not counting the teacher’s professional learning days, around 3 times a year and the 2 weeks between Christmas and the first week of the year.
When kids are home they get bored, but also my heart wanted to stay all these days off with them. I wished so badly that I could stay with them and go to a park or play with them during all these days off. But adult life is different we have fewer days off compared to children. Many colleagues take spring break with kids at work and the week between Christmas and New Year off spending our vacation leave days. I think those days would be nice to be included in the statutory holidays. Especially this week at the end of the year since many people like to visit families. With better synchronization between school days and general work days, kids and their parents would have more time with themselves. Kids need their parents close, at least when they are younger in their growth period until they reach their teens.
If we had at least these two weeks off without being counted as vacations we could spend more of these vacation days in the summer when going camp or making longer trips with the kids somewhere else. But I think that companies wouldn’t like much reducing so much the working days during the year because they want us to work as much as we can to produce them.
So the the solution will continue the same, trying to find paid options to keep busy kids during their time off maybe spending vacation days once in a while. Well of course there is always the other option which many parents do, which is taking a school teacher job so they can have the same time off periods as their kids. I could do that but I would need to take a Canadian teacher certificate, one more year studying for that. Maybe for now, I will continue to spend some money on summer camps and daycares.
A escola em Alberta é interessante para os alunos, mas não tão interessante para os pais. As crianças têm dias em casa quando são dias de trabalho regulares para os pais. Claro, temos feriados em comum chamados feriados estatutários, mas ainda há muitos outros dias que não posso passar com meus filhos em casa para fazer outras atividades, a menos que eu tire meus dias de férias remuneradas no trabalho, dos quais tenho um total de 15 dias por ano. É difícil porque as crianças querem passar seus dias de folga com seus pais e na maioria das vezes isso é impossível. Ouvimos muitos pais reclamando sobre isso e, na maioria dos casos, os pais decidem colocar seus filhos em programas de creche ou acampamentos de verão durante o verão.
Três vezes durante o ano, precisamos pensar no que fazer com as crianças que não têm aula. Em fevereiro, temos a semana de leitura e em abril, temos as férias de primavera. Ambas as vezes, as crianças passam uma semana inteira em casa. Se pudermos, podemos também tirar uma semana de férias e viajar para algum lugar, mas é impossível passar ambas durante um ano com eles. Além disso, as férias de verão começam no final de junho e vão até o início de setembro. Então, pelo menos 2 meses, as crianças ficam em casa. Também não estou contando os dias de aprendizado profissional dos professores, cerca de 3 vezes por ano, e as 2 semanas entre o Natal e a primeira semana do ano.
Quando as crianças estão em casa, elas ficam entediadas, mas também meu coração queria passar todos esses dias de folga com elas. Eu desejava tanto poder ficar com elas e ir a um parque ou brincar com elas durante todos esses dias de folga. Mas a vida adulta é diferente, temos menos dias de folga em comparação com as crianças. Muitos colegas tiram as férias de primavera com as crianças no trabalho e a semana entre o Natal e o Ano Novo, gastando nossos dias de folga. Acho que esses dias seriam legais de serem incluídos nos feriados estatutários. Especialmente esta semana no final do ano, já que muitas pessoas gostam de visitar suas famílias. Com uma melhor sincronização entre os dias escolares e os dias de trabalho em geral, as crianças e seus pais teriam mais tempo juntos. As crianças precisam de seus pais por perto, pelo menos quando são mais novas em seu período de crescimento até chegarem à adolescência.
Se tivéssemos pelo menos essas duas semanas de folga sem serem contadas como férias, poderíamos passar mais desses dias de férias no verão indo acampar ou fazendo viagens mais longas com as crianças para outro lugar. Mas acho que as empresas não gostariam muito de reduzir tanto os dias de trabalho durante o ano porque querem que trabalhemos o máximo que pudermos para produzi-los.
Então, a solução continuará a mesma, tentando encontrar opções pagas para manter as crianças ocupadas durante o tempo livre delas, talvez gastando dias de férias de vez em quando. Bem, é claro que sempre há a outra opção que muitos pais fazem, que é conseguir um emprego de professor para que possam ter os mesmos períodos de folga que seus filhos. Eu poderia fazer isso, mas precisaria obter um certificado de professor canadense, mais um ano estudando para isso. Talvez por enquanto, eu continue a gastar algum dinheiro em acampamentos de verão e creches.
