Crimson Tide is a 1995 American action thriller film directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. The film takes place during a period of political turmoil in Russia, in which ultranationalists threaten to launch missiles at the United States and Japan. The USS Alabama, a nuclear missile submarine, receives an unconfirmed order to launch its missiles, signaling the start of World War III. The tension quickly rises as the sub's respected commander (Hackman) and his brilliant executive officer (Washington) clash over the validity of their orders, battling each other for control of the sub.

The film stars Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington, who portray two men at odds in the worst of situations, the possibility of war. The film has been praised for its intensity and the relationship between the two lead characters. The film has also been noted for its cracking dialogue, courtesy of an uncredited Quentin Tarantino.

Crimson Tide has been described as one of Tony Scott's more effective efforts and probably the best submarine movie since Hunt for the Red October. The film was a commercial success, grossing $157.4 million against a budget of $53 million.
