The data is pulled from the many U.S. Government agencies.
There are a number of services provided by the St. Louis Fed Bank in regards to data archival and updates.
ALFRED - retrieve economic data on specific dates in history.
GeoFRED - data mapping tool
CASSIDI - provides data on banking industry including depository institutions.
FRASER (The Federal Reserve Archival System for Economic Research) - This was begun in 2004 to digitally archive and preserve U.S. history.
