John McClane is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Die Hard franchise. He is portrayed in all five films by actor Bruce Willis. McClane is a New York City police detective who is known for his wisecracks, his everyman persona, and his ability to improvise under pressure.

McClane was born and raised in New York City. He joined the New York Police Department after graduating from high school and quickly rose through the ranks. He is a skilled marksman and hand-to-hand combatant, and he is also an expert in demolition and hostage rescue.

McClane is first introduced in the 1988 film Die Hard, in which he is visiting his estranged wife, Holly Gennaro, at a Christmas party at Nakatomi Plaza, a Los Angeles skyscraper. The party is interrupted by a group of German terrorists led by Hans Gruber, who take over the building and hold the hostages hostage. McClane is the only person who can stop the terrorists, and he must use his resourcefulness and wit to battle them and rescue the hostages.

McClane returns in the 1990 sequel Die Hard 2: Die Harder, in which he is on a plane with his wife when it is taken over by a group of mercenaries led by Colonel Stuart. McClane must once again thwart the terrorists and rescue the hostages.

McClane appears in a third sequel, Die Hard with a Vengeance, in 1995. This time, he is teamed up with a mystery man named Zeus Carver to stop a series of bombings in New York City.

McClane returns in a fourth sequel, Live Free or Die Hard, in 2007. This time, he is teamed up with his estranged son, Jack, to stop a cyber-terrorist named Thomas Gabriel from taking control of the nation's infrastructure.

McClane makes his final appearance in the fifth film in the series, A Good Day to Die Hard, in 2013. This time, he travels to Moscow to help his son, Jack, who is working undercover for the CIA. However, they soon find themselves caught up in a dangerous plot to assassinate the Russian president.

John McClane is a complex and well-developed character who is both flawed and heroic. He is a man of action who is not afraid to take risks, but he is also a man who cares deeply for his family and friends. McClane is a popular and enduring character who has been praised for his wit, his courage, and his ability to overcome adversity.
