alternatetext

Solar Attack (also called Solar Strike) is a 2006 television film by CineTel Films and Lions Gate Entertainment, starring Mark Dacascos, Joanne Kelly and Louis Gossett Jr.

The film concerns large coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that cause the Earth's atmosphere to burn, potentially suffocating all life on Earth. All of this happens during a time of political tension between the United States and Russia. Disaster is eventually averted by the detonation of nuclear missiles at the poles, releasing vapor that extinguishes the burning methane caused by the CMEs.

The film begins with a solar probe operated by the fictional Solar and Near Earth Laboratory (SNEL) being destroyed by a CME. A crewed spacecraft, Galileo, is also caught in the CME and destroyed. The tragedies are blamed on defective Russian equipment. CMEs knock satellites out of orbit, turning them into deadly meteors. One CME hits New Zealand, destroying it and turning it into a huge mass of molten rock.

After a multi-millionaire, Lucas Foster (Mark Dacascos), funds a program to fight global warming, it is discovered that the Earth's atmosphere is now 5 percent methane. The methane is being produced by the burning of fossil fuels.

The President of the United States (Louis Gossett Jr.) and his advisors meet to discuss the situation. They decide to detonate nuclear missiles at the poles in order to release vapor that will extinguish the burning methane.

The plan is successful, and the Earth is saved from destruction. However, the film ends with a warning that future CMEs could be even more powerful, and that humanity must find a way to protect itself from them.

Solar Attack is a suspenseful and thought-provoking film that explores the dangers of solar storms and the importance of environmental protection. It is a film that is both entertaining and educational.
