Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens is a 2015 American epic space opera film co-produced, co-written, and directed by J. J. Abrams. It is the seventh film in the "Skywalker Saga" and the sequel to "Return of the Jedi" (1983).

The story centers around Rey, an independent, resourceful scavenger on the planet Jakku, who has clearly endured many hardships throughout her life. The film is set thirty years after "Return of the Jedi" and follows Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and Han Solo's search for Luke Skywalker and their fight in the Resistance, led by General Leia Organa and veterans of the Rebel Alliance, against Kylo Ren and the First Order, a successor to the Galactic Empire.

The film received positive reviews and was praised for successfully recalling the series' former glory while injecting it with renewed energy. It was also noted for its masterful weaving of the old and new, and for resurrecting the Star Wars franchise with more life and vigor than ever.
