alternatetext

Working Girl is a 1988 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Mike Nichols and starring Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, and Melanie Griffith.

Tess McGill (Griffith) is a 30-year-old secretary from Staten Island who dreams of climbing the corporate ladder to an executive position. Despite holding a business degree earned through evening classes, her boss and male co-workers at the stockbroker firm in lower Manhattan where she works as a secretary treat her like a bimbo, even though they benefit from her intelligence and business instincts.

After reaching her limit with her boss's humiliations, Tess dramatically quits. Tess then lands a job as an administrative assistant to Katharine Parker (Weaver), a young associate in mergers and Acquisitions. Tess quickly impresses Katharine with her intelligence and work ethic, and Katharine begins to rely on her heavily.

One day, Katharine breaks her leg while skiing and is unable to work. Tess volunteers to take over Katharine's workload, and she quickly proves herself to be capable of handling the job. Tess also begins to develop a romantic relationship with Jack Trainer (Ford), a handsome investment banker.

When Katharine returns from her injury, she is furious to discover that Tess has been running the show in her absence. Katharine tries to discredit Tess and steal her ideas, but Tess is able to outsmart her. In the end, Tess gets the promotion she deserves and wins the heart of Jack.

Working Girl is a classic Cinderella story about a young woman who overcomes adversity to achieve her dreams. It is also a celebration of female empowerment and the power of hard work and determination. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Melanie Griffith.
