What Is GHAWG?
#GHAWG is short for "God's Hog: A Watchful Guardian." This fictional story tells how David Guardia, a courier and business owner from Bayonne, New Jersey, US moved into the next phase of his life after spending the final ten years of his ailing father's life helping him.

Manny Rey noticed the bruise on my face. I explained how I defended myself against the Sinatra hater. "This isn't New Jersey"-- which was true. I looked for a witness to back me up, but the tall redhead had left the bar already.
🏍️ Singer and entertainer Frank Sinatra was from Hoboken, New Jersey, US. David Guardia and Manny Rey were in the state of Ohio. Different cultures in each place. While it's true that Sinatra as a singer was admired in many places across the nation and around the world, not everyone likes his style of music. Then again, this can be said of any performer.
🏍️ The tall redhead noted in last week's summary post was already gone by the time Manny Rey finds David Guardia looking funny, but the reference shows how important she is to the zapfic serial, even if it's not apparent at this time.

Manny Rey and I passed Sturgis, Indiana on US HWY 12. After riding past town and township we reached White Pigeon Twp near Klinger Lake. Manny Rey saw a crowd of rowdies getting larger when he asked me if I knew how to swim.
🏍️ When most people hear the name "Sturgis" for the first time, it's in one of two contexts:
- First context-- the one at the heart of #GHAWG-- is the annual motorcycle rally held in Sturgis, South Dakota, US.
- Second context is historical: Samuel Davis Sturgis was a general for the United States in the Union Army when the American Civil War (also known as the War for Secession) began in 1861.
The 2nd context was new to me, and it explains why multiple places are named Sturgis.
🏍️ In my mind, for a different story, I had envisioned this scene taking place in a different way. It's just as well that it came out this way.

"I can swim," I said to Manny Rey.
"If we reach that ramp first,
we can fly rather than swim."
Manny Rey and I hit top speed as
the rowdies chased us in all manner
of vehicles. We hit that ramp.
We could fly. They couldn't.
🏍️ This is just a continuation of the previous zapfic entry. The 3 short sentences at the end are why I modified the previous entry.

Manny Rey and I kept riding on I80 past White Pigeon Township until we reached South Bend. The potholes were our cue to take stop at a diner. We talked for a bit. He and Harry had a falling out. I'm living out a mid-life crisis.
🏍️ South Bend, Indiana, US, is where Notre Dame University is located. It was also the town where the current Secretary of Transportation was mayor. He had been known as "Pothole Pete," and the name wasn't flattering.
🏍️ We get an idea of David Guardia's age when he mentions the mid-life crisis he's having. By that point in life men are buying expensive exotic cars to drive, or they dump their wives for women barely out of college. Neither situation applies here, but a mid-life crisis can happen for any reason.

"Too much time working," I said.
"Personal plans deferred for
more immediate priorities. Now that
my father is in a better place,
I can start over."
Manny Rey looked at me, then said
"Now you start the next phase
of your life."
🏍️ One possible reason for the letter Manny Rey handed David Guardia when they met comes to light. Is it court papers to be served to Harry? Is it a peace offering? Is it a wedding invitation? The real reason remains to be determined.
🏍️ Manny Rey speaks to David with a certainty few people if any can have. It's as if he could see into the future. When #GHAWG takes place, there are no sports championships taking place, so this ability cannot be displayed in the form of picking a winner and winning big.

At Gary, Indiana we stopped for gas and drinks. I left the store & saw Manny Rey performing magic tricks for a group of children. When I got near them they scattered. Manny Rey saw embarrassment on my face and nodded slowly.
🏍️ I wrote this zapfic entry to show a different side of Manny Rey. I also wrote it to show that David Guardia still has something about him which keeps people at a distance.

I saw Manny Rey surrounded by 3 men. Harm was in their eyes. I don't know how it began, but I know how it ended: Manny Rey smiled as he squeezed a glass bottle until it cracked. The confused men were afraid, so they withdrew.
🏍️ It's not easy to break a glass bottle, never mind to break a glass bottle by squeezing it. Few if any people can do that, but Manny Rey is one of those people. Without resorting to violence, Manny Rey showed how strong and fearless he was. He was also ready to mix it up with his potential assailants if that's what they decided. He gave them one chance to make the right decision, and they decided wisely. It's safe to say that Manny Rey had instilled the fear of God in them.

Story Arc So Far
David Guardia and Manny Rey ride together through Ohio and Indiana. Along the way they learn more about each other, although it's more like Manny Rey learning about David. Personal and humorous moments take place. A few scenes take place to give us a better idea of who Manny Rey is. David ends up flying off the handle after he gets punched in the face by someone who disagrees with his taste in music. Even if he just stands still children are afraid of David.
