The tour of the Christmas Markets from Vienna, Austria

That time of the year came, and even though I failed to write about these places seen last year in December, there is no better moment to do it than now, on such a special day when you get to taste a bit of the Christmas vibe and the feeling of giving and receiving gifts.

The funny thing is that 3 weeks ago the Christmas Market was inaugurated in Sibiu which I was always looking forward to, but considering that in the last couple of years ended up looking pretty much the same as the previous year, I didn't really get to feel the same excitement I used to.

Happily, opening up the folder with memories created while exploring Vienna, made me feel that Christmas Markets vibe a lot more than expected, so that did contribute to making me set up this post as it's a really good period of the year to book your tickets to this place, even for just the sake of the 12 Christmas Markets from this city.

City Hall (Rathausplatz)

The largest and most famous Christmas Market in Vienna is held on Rathausplatz, in front of the 19th-century City Hall with over 145 stalls that bring a lot of interesting things for seasonal shopping.

Being the most famous one also means being the crowdest one, which is the main reason we've spent so little time in this place feeling like we could taste the feeling better in the other markets. Happily, there are plenty of them, and no matter the period of the day or night you decide to make your way towards them, you should find one closer to your taste.

Christmas Market Schönbrunn Palace

Starting with the end of November, countless Christmas Markets begin popping up all over the city, these having different periods of time when they are opened or closed, but this only contributes to the side of being able to see all of them without feeling the pressure of time anymore.

But as beautiful as it is to see Vienna in winter due to all the Christmas vibe that feels a lot more magical in this part of Europe, you should consider checking out what really has to offer this city because along with the seasonal markets, there are plenty of spots that are waiting for tourists during the whole year and which are worth a visit.

We managed to mix them together and explore Vienna while checking out the Christmas Markets too, but I would definitely love to return one day just for the tourist attractions that are way too many to capture entirely in just a one-week-long trip as we had.

Christmas Market at Museumsquartier

Having so many Christmas Markets in Vienna is not a random thing as they are a centuries-old tradition which began in 1298 when this activity started by only selling meat but slowly evolved into a place frequently visited by both locals and tourists who used them as another method for the everyday purchases, season treats, decorations and being able to dance and sing on the streets without being considered a weird thing.

With the passage of time, more markets started being released including more of these in the bigger cities, each sticking to a specific plan and place even if at first might seem like the same thing. We discovered this on our own being able to find unique crafts and products for selling in every single Christmas Market explored even if they were all connected in one way or another to the seasonal holidays.

We didn't manage to see all the Chrismas Markets of Vienna but I'll leave down below a complete list with these in case you plan to book a trip there, with the mention that most of them are located in the old town or along the main boulevard of the city (Ringstrasse) making it easier for you to follow on foot. However, in order to see these from Prater and Schönbrunn Palace you’ll need to use public transport, but it's definitely worth it.
