Roadblock | Shook Chapter 21 Part 2

There's one more bridge between Augusta and Dyan's new home. Only problem is, there's a bull moose on the path!...

As the car creeped onto the bridge, the moose pulled its head up. Dyan gasped and jumped. The moose stared at them, ears twitching.

“Stay, calm, stay calm,” Mr. Fletcher put his free hand up. “Just stay calm. We’ll be past this thing in a moment,” Mr. Fletcher went a bit faster.

Dyan could hardly breathe, but she didn’t want to start breathing from her mouth, or the moose might hear. She focused her attention on the river. Rivers were much louder then Dyan thought they would be. The river roared lowly and rippled constantly like the ocean. This river was dark blue. It was so wide it would probably take Newf fifteen minutes to swim across it.

They were a pole's length away from the moose. Mr. Fletcher drove slowly, eyes glued to the animal. After a moment, the moose stared past them and trotted forward.

“Oh.” Mr. Fletcher smiled. “He's leaving, I think we're good to go.” He drove faster.

As soon as he made that terrible mistake, the moose turned back to the car. It slowly lowered its head. Mr. Fletcher went backwards. “Hold up-”

The moose charged!

Dyan shrieked and curled up into a ball. She stared into her coat as she heard the wild beast galloping forward.

“Hey! WOAH WOAH WOAH!” Mr. Fletcher yelled and went in reverse.

Everything went silent. Dyan was blinking, so she wasn’t dead. She looked up to see the moose right at her window.

The moose had leaned his head down to level with the window, and his void-like eyes stared at Dyan while the lump at the end of his muzzle twitched.

“I’m not dying today moose, I won’t die to you today. I just won’t.” Dyan whispered to herself. She turned away from it.

The moose lifted his head again, and trotted away from the car, towards the way they’d come from.

“Thank god!” said Mr. Fletcher. “That was close. You are one brave girl.”

Dyan didn’t smile, but she did feel as brave as Spirit right then.

“Why didn't that moose move off the road when it saw cars coming?” Dyan asked, her breathing finally going back to normal.

“Oh, I should tell you. Moose aren’t like deer. They aren’t so much afraid of humans and if they’re angry they might charge. Don’t worry, they usually only come out in the evening and early morning. Just don’t get too close to ‘em.”

This was going to be something she would have to live with!? Dyan spent the rest of the drive worrying about moose attacks.
