Driving Through Augusta...

Augusta was somewhat the same as Dyan’s neighborhood in Raleigh, but there were some differences. For starters, the street lights in Augusta were black, unlike the yellow ones from back home. Electricity poles lined the sides of the road, power lines crossing overhead like a messy spider web. They passed gas stations, restaurants, shops, and other short buildings. There were some green trees looking as puffy and fluffy as broccoli, and some gray skinny trees that looked sharp with not one leaf on their entire body. The sky was a cloudy gray speckled with darker shades mixed in, as if it might rain.

Mr. Fletcher kept asking questions every so often when it got quiet. Dyan answered with as little words as possible. When Mr. Fletcher asked about school, Dyan tried her hardest not to snap. Why do adults ask if kids like school? Isn't the answer obvious!?

They drove past the city and got backed up behind a line of cars. Every few minutes they would move up slightly.

Dyan looked out her window and saw that the line of cars led to a bridge that lay over a river ahead. One by one cars were slowly driving across the bridge to the road on the other side.

“Can the bridge only hold one car at a time?” Dyan asked.

Mr. Fletcher looked at Dyan through the rearview mirror. “It can hold more, but there’s a bull moose on the bridge. Nobody wants to disturb that thing, so everyone’s going slow.”

Dyan took another look out the window and she saw it. In the middle of the bridge on the left side was a large, hairy brown moose with wide antlers. It was staring at the cars carefully as each made a point to give the moose a wide amount of space, curving around the area it stood in.

Eventually all the cars in front of them made it past, and the moose was alone, licking something off the bridge. Dyan’s heart drummed against her chest.
