The plane roared and launched itself into the sky while Dyan thought about surface thoughts. Surface thoughts, as Dyan had explained to Maya one day, were things Dyan could think about but not get too deep into, like what soda was best or a movie she had recently watched.

The scenery had changed from patches of snow, and cars that looked ant-sized to open greenery and forests, with squares of lighter or darker grass in open planes. The plane landed in Philadelphia, and Dyan got on another plane headed to Augusta.

She napped. When she woke up and took a look out of the plane windows, she saw greenery everywhere. The ground was covered in pointy green trees that were occasionally separated by puddle-shaped lakes. Sometimes, there would be a whole patch of gray leafless-trees that made the Earth look like it had bald spots.

She saw more and more bald patches in the greenery, but instead of trees, they were filled with tiny house plots and noodle-sized roads. When the plane got lower to the ground, Dyan knew this was Augusta she was looking at. Her new home.

She got off the plane and one of the flight attendants asked if she was Dyan Smith. When Dyan nodded, the flight attendant walked her to the cab area where a man with a thin brown coat and a christmas sweater stood in front of a car.

The flight attendant explained who Dyan was, and then she turned and leaned down slightly to Dyan’s level. “This is Mr. Fletcher. He’s going to take you to your foster home.”

“Okay,” was all Dyan said. She looked up at Mr. Fletcher. Besides his coat and sweater, he was wearing a linty brown flat cap above his head. He adjusted it. “Welcome to Augusta Dyan. I’m Mr. Fletcher. I can tell the colds’ got you looking like a ripe tomato,” he chuckled. Dyan stared at herself in the reflection of his shiny car and saw that her brown skin was red around her nose and cheeks, making her look like Rudolph's lost cousin.

She was happy when Mr. Fletcher turned the heat on in his small car. Dyan gladly sat in the middle seat in the back and leaned her head close to the air as Mr. Fletcher began to drive.
