Warhammer 40k - Unit Review Wheel 19 - T'au Empire, Kroot Carnivore Squad

Source

Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!

In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.

So let me spin the wheel and see what I get:

T'au Empire - Kroot Carnivore Squad

10th Edition Index

Another T'au Empire unit to review and again, there is a new Codex coming out but is not yet available... so the Wheel shall be obeyed.

I think the rule that will happen is that once a new Codex has dropped, then the units that I have reviewed can be rolled again... this means that I shall need to start specifying the update level of the unit review... now added above.

In this case the 10th Edition Index, which is where MOST factions get their stats.

So, the T'au Empire is a race of aliens who have an idealistic philosophy of the "Greater Good". It is apparent in later fiction that this is merely a cover and that they are up to something.

We do not know what that is, but we shall find out in the future!

In the meantime, something that makes the Tau interesting is that they use many ally races in their Empire. In the current rules the Kroot are the largest contributor to this as a fighting force.

At the core of Kroot forces are the Kroot Carnivores.

Kroot are cheap bodies to screen with and to use to hold objectives at 55pts for 10 models. They are also extremely fragile with fairly medium damage dealing capabilities.

Statline

They have a 7" Move, making them fairly fast.
Toughness 3 (Baseline human)
A 6+ Save (Terrible)
1 Wound.
Leadership is a 7+ which is also low.

Weapons

Weapons-wise they have better with the Kroot rifle. This is both their close combat and ranged weapon.

At Range it is a standard boltgun equivalent. 24" range with 1 attack and Rapid Fire 1 so 2x shots at 12".
Strength 4, AP nothing and 1 Damage.
Thus Firstborn Bolter equivalent.

In Melee they have 2 Attacks each, S4, AP0 and D1. So comparable with a Space Marine with an ordinary knife.

Abilities

They have a 7" Scout move and Stealth. Stealth gives them a small durability increase. Units shooting at the Kroot get a -1 to Hit.

Their other ability is Grisly Feast. They are called Carnivores for a reason. When they kill a unit in the Fight Phase they gain a 5+ Feel No Pain.

This is great... however I am not very confident that they will kill many things in combat. Sure, there will be some targets they can handle and getting the bonus would be amazing.

Or if the rest of the Tau have slaughtered the unit down to one or two models then they could try mop them up.

Otherwise the Kroot would be better screening out the other Tau units from charges and being used as sacrifices or holding objectives and completing Secondary Objectives.

Thank you for reading this post! I hope that you enjoyed it!
