The lady from Norway – 10 albums and still on the search.
It has been almost ten years since Rebekka Bakken first dedicated an entire album to the songs of another artist. Back then, she called the project “Little Drop Of Poison” and reinterpreted Tom Waits' compositions. Now she is venturing back into the classics, but on the album “Always On My Mind”, which has just been released, she does not limit herself to a single artist, but draws on the whole range, from Don McLean to Annie Lennox to Nazareth, to name just a few.
Es sind beinahe zehn Jahre ins Land gezogen, seit Rebekka Bakken sich erstmals mit einem kompletten Album den Songs eines anderen Künstlers widmete. Damals nannte sie das Projekt “Little Drop Of Poison” und interpretierte Tom Waits Kompositionen neu. Jetzt wagt sie sich erneut an Klassiker, doch beschränkt sie sich auf dem jetzt erschienenen Album “Always On My Mind” nicht auf einen einzelnen Künstler, sondern nutzt die volle Bandbreite von Don McLean über Annie Lennox hin zu Nazareth, um nur einige wenige zu erwähnen.
When it comes to cover versions of songs, it is easy to go back to the original. In this case, however, I strongly advise you to take your time and enjoy the new style. Not only are the arrangements convincing, but also (as always) the unique voice of Rebekka Bakken, which has this tingling timbre and sometimes sounds a bit undercooled, makes the album worth listening to.
Wenn es um Coversongs geht, neigt man ja leicht dazu, letztlich sich doch wieder dem Original zuzuwenden. In diesem Fall rate ich jedoch dringend dazu, in aller Ruhe die neue Machart zu genießen. Nicht nur die Arrangements überzeugen, sondern (wie eigentlich immer) die einzigartige Stimme von Rebekka Bakken, die jenes prickelnde Timbre in sich birgt und so manches Mal auch leicht unterkühlt klingt, machen das Album so hörenswert.
Ms Bakken herself explains the choice of songs for the album: “These songs have always been on my mind and have inspired my own songwriting. They are the 'soundtrack of my life' and some of them have been with me since childhood. I developed my own voice listening to these songs and it's just the right time to reinterpret them in my own way”.
Frau Bakken selbst erklärt die Auswahl der Songs für das Album so: “Diese Songs sind mir immer wieder durch den Kopf gegangen und inspirierten mein eigenes Songwriting. Sie sind der ‚Soundtrack meines Lebens‘ und einige von ihnen begleiten mich seit meiner Kindheit. Ich habe beim Hören dieser Songs meine eigene Stimme entwickelt und es ist genau der richtige Zeitpunkt, sie in meinem Sinne neu zu interpretieren.“
Incidentally, the album before 'Always On My Mind' was called 'Things You Leave Behind'. It is one of those works where the artists compress profound changes in their lives and let them flow into their compositions. The death of their long-time touring agent, a new man at their side, a change of record company and, last but not least, the birth of their first child. Material that others would write novels about, Rebekka Bakken weaves into her songs.
Das Album vor “Always On My Mind” trug übrigens den Titel 'Things You Leave Behind'. Eines dieser Werke, wenn Künstler in ihrem Leben komprimiert tiefgreifende Veränderungen erfahren und diese in ihre Kompositionen einfließen lassen. Der Tod des langjährigen Tour-Agenten, ein neuer Mann an ihrer Seite, der Wechsel der Plattenfirma und nicht zuletzt die Geburt ihres ersten Kindes. Stoff, aus dem andere Romane schreiben, verwebt Rebekka Bakken in ihren Liedern.
Another change was her move back to her home country. It was her return to her native Norway after many years. Before this, she thought moving to Manhattan would be a musical reinvention. She describes her experience this way: “I wanted to somehow find a connection to this city, an affirmation, to meet people who were like me. Instead, I found myself surrounded by green-tea- and organic-juice-drinking guys in Birkenstock sandals who just didn't want to make any noise. I've always felt strange and weird, but rarely so much.”
Eine weitere Veränderung fand durch den erneuten Wohnortwechsel statt. Es zog sie nach Jahren wieder zurück in ihre Heimat Norwegen. Zuvor dachte sie viele Jahre, sie könne sich mit einem Umzug nach Manhattan musikalisch neu erfinden. Sie beschreibt ihre Erfahrung so: “Ich wollte irgendwie einen Bezug zu dieser Stadt finden, eine Bestätigung, Leute treffen, die so sind wie ich. Stattdessen fand ich mich inmitten Grün-Tee- und Organische-Säfte-trinkender Jungs in Birkenstock-Sandalen, die bloß keinen Krach machen wollten. Ich fühlte mich immer schon fremd und seltsam, aber selten so sehr.“
