When jazz gives folk music a new sparkle
Wenn der Jazz dem Folk zu neuem Glanz verhilft
Before I get lost in a mass of facts and figures, which in the end turn out to be nothing more than decorative accessories for the artist and her musical work today, I would like to let her choose the words:
“I put a lot of emphasis on the good craftsmanship of my instrument, on modern sounds and accompaniments in which I try to sound like a “****one-woman-band****” (sometimes percussive, sometimes with picking, especially in open tunings or with strumming) without disturbing the story of the song. I want to find the optimal sound for each song, without giving you the feeling that something is missing and that it has a banal sound”.
Bevor ich mich in einem Konvolut von Fakten und Daten verliere, die sich letztlich lediglich als schmückendes Beiwerk zur heutigen Künstlerin und ihrem musikalischen Schaffen erweisen, schlage ich vor, sie selbst zu Wort kommen zu lassen:
»Besonders viel Wert lege ich auf gutes Handwerk auf meinem Instrument, moderne Sounds und Begleitungen, in denen ich versuche, wie eine „Ein-Frau-Band“ zu klingen (mal perkussiv, mal mit Pickings besonders in Open Tunings oder mit Strumming), ohne dass die Geschichte des Songs gestört wird. Ich möchte den optimalen Klangteppich für jeden Song finden, ohne dass man das Gefühl hat, dass da etwas fehlt und es banal klingt.«
When he was asked about the album "Seagull" by Jule Malischke, the critic of the magazine "jazz-fun" gave his opinion:
"It is a perfect artistic amalgamation of the most beautiful things that music has to offer. The various singer-songwriter elements flavour the ballad-like idiom, which is in the best tradition of pure guitar music. The mood, tempo, and tonality of each song make it easy for the listener to engage with this cycle".
Auf das Album ”Seagull” von Jule Malischke angesprochen, gibt der Kritiker von “jazz-fun” seine Einschätzung kund:
»Ein perfektes künstlerisches Amalgam aus dem Schönsten, was die Musik zu bieten hat. Die verschiedenen Singer-Songwriter-Elemente verleihen dem balladenhaften Idiom, das in der besten Tradition der reinen Gitarrenmusik steht, eine geschmackvolle Würze. Die Stimmung, das Tempo und die Tonalität jedes einzelnen Liedes machen es dem Zuhörer leicht, sich auf diesen Zyklus einzugehen.«
After 'Whatever May Happen', 'Seagull' is the second long-player that the singer, songwriter and guitarist, who was born in Heidenheim (Germany) in 1989, has released. In contrast to the first LP, Jule Malischke has taken a lot more control over the production of the current album herself. She even founded a new record label, Jule Malischke Records. Seagull is a mixture of instrumental pieces and the kind of songs that you would expect from a singer-songwriter, i.e. songs with vocals. With the exception of the four cover songs, the rest of the album is entirely the artist's own writing. The result is a journey through her emotional world that is almost autobiographical in nature.
”Seagull” ist, nach ”Whatever May Happen” der zweite Longplayer, den die 1989 in Heidenheim (Deutschland) geborene Singer-Songwriterin und Gitarristin auf den Markt gebracht hat. Ganz im Gegensatz zur ersten LP übernahm Jule Malischke bei der jetzigen Produktion viel mehr selbst die Kontrolle. Sie gründete sogar ein neues Plattenlabel - Jule Malischke Records. Seagull ist eine Mischung aus Instrumentalstücken und den Songs, die man - also mit Gesang - von einer Singer-Songwriterin erwartet. Außer den vier Coversongs stammt der ganze Rest aus der Feder der Künstlerin. So entstand wohl eine beinahe autobiografische Reise durch ihre Gefühlswelt.
For "Free Your Mind", Jule Malischke asked a true guitar legend to accompany her in the studio with his fretless bass: Don Ross. According to the singer, the song should be understood as an encouragement to everyone. To never lose the sparkling energy and passion of your childhood. "Soulfriend" is dedicated to her late friend Willy Geyer, who was the one who encouraged her to discover her voice as an instrument in addition to her guitar.
Für den Song ”Free Your Mind” bat Jule Malischke eine wahre Gitarrenlegende mit seinem Fretless-Bass zur Unterstützung ins Studio: Don Ross. Der Song, so die Interpretin, soll als Ermutigung an alle verstanden werden, die über sprühende Energie und Leidenschaft aus der Kindheit nie zu verlieren. ”Soulfriend” ist ihrem leider verstorbenen Freund Willy Geyer gewidmet, der sie überhaupt erst ermutigte, neben der Gitarre auch ihre Stimme als Instrument zu entdecken.
In addition to Don Ross, the Canadian pianist Grégory Privat should also be mentioned, who mixed the album and provided the musical inspiration for one or another of the songs. Jule Malischke's performances at the guitar festival in Ullapool (Scotland) show once again that this young artist knows very well how to interpret classical singer-songwriter role models such as Joni Mitchell or Michael Hedges in a folk-influenced jazz style.
To sum up, I think that not only the album "Seagull", but also the artist who is responsible for it, is absolutely worth listening to.
Neben Don Ross sei auch noch der kanadische Pianist Grégory Privat erwähnt, der das Album mit abmischte und obendrein noch die musikalische Vorlage für den einen oder anderen Song beisteuerte. Jule Malischkes Auftritte bei dem Gitarrenfestival in Ullapool (Schottland) verdeutlicht erneut, dass die junge Künstlerin es sehr wohl versteht, klassische Vorbilder aus dem Bereich Singer-Songwriter, wie Joni Mitchell oder Michael Hedges, im vom Folk beeinflussten Jazz zu interpretieren.
Zusammengefasst bleibt zu sagen, dass ich nicht nur das Album ”Seagull”, sondern auch die dafür verantwortliche Künstlerin für absolut hörenswert halte.
