For today's jazz matinee, I've invited a couple of guys who could easily cause a bit of confusion with the name of their band. But on closer examination, one realises that an extra 'n' and 's' can turn a bankruptcy petition into a great musical project. The original name of the band was found out more than ten years ago in the grammar school and it was called "New Age Groove Brotherhood". In my opinion, the change to "Lehmanns Brothers" was a good idea in the end. - Despite risk of mix-up.
Zur heutigen Jazz-Matinee habe ich ein paar Jungs eingeladen, die mit ihrer Namensgebung für die Formation leicht für etwas Verwirrung sorgen könnten. Doch stellt man bei genauerer Betrachtung fest, dass ein zusätzliches »n« und ein »s« aus einer Bankrotterklärung ein großartiges Musikprojekt lässt. Der ursprüngliche Name der Band wurde vor mehr als zehn Jahren auf dem Gymnasium gefunden und lautete »New-Age-Groove-Bruderschaft«. Wie ich finde, war der Wechsel zu »Lehmanns Brothers« dann letztlich doch ein guter Einfall. - Trotz der Gefahr des Verwechselns.
The name comes from a garage in Angoulême (France), located on the "Avenue de Lehmann". This is where they used to meet to rehearse. That was in 2012 and now they are back with a new album, available in stores as "Playground".
As the critics put it: "New ideas blend harmoniously with tradition. The album is characterised by vitality, energy, a high emotional charge and an incredible ease with musical conventions. An album that is fun to listen to."
Der Name ist im Übrigen einer Garage in Angoulême (Frankreich) zu verdanken, die sich in der
“Avenue de Lehmann” befindet und in der man sich zum Proben traf. Das war 2012 und jetzt sind sie mit einem neuen Album am Start, das unter dem Namen »Playground« im Handel erhältlich ist.
Die Kritik sagt dazu: »Neue Ideen verbinden sich harmonisch mit der Tradition. Das Album zeichnet sich durch Vitalität, Energie, eine hohe emotionale Ladung und eine unglaubliche Leichtigkeit im Umgang mit musikalischen Konventionen aus. Ein Album, das Spaß macht.«
"Playground" is (at least according to the members of the band) the answer to the question that the musicians have been asking themselves after twelve years of working together: "Where do we find ourselves on our journey?"
The three musicians who have been part of the band from the very beginning were the main contributors to the search for answers (and the composing of new songs). Alvin Amaïzo (vocals, keyboards, guitar & bass), Julien Anglade (vocals & keyboards) and Dorris Biayenda (drums).
»Playground« soll (so zumindest nach Aussage der Bandmitglieder) die Antwort auf die Frage sein, die sich die Musiker nach zwölfjähriger Zusammenarbeit gestellt haben: “Wo stehen wir überhaupt auf unserer Reise?”
Den größten Anteil bei der Findung von Antworten (Komponieren von neuen Songs) steuerten die drei Musiker bei, die von der ersten Minute der Band angehören. Alvin Amaïzo (Gesang, Keyboard, Gitarre & Bass), Julien Anglade (Gesang & Keyboard) und Dorris Biayenda (Schlagzeug).
It seemed as if the fun of making music had been gradually pushed into the background. After all, ever since we left school we had been occupied almost exclusively with rehearsing, experimenting and touring from one festival to the next. Such a thing leaves its mark – especially when you're so young. It was then, almost in the centre of France (in the region of Touraine ), that they took the time to look to the future with a renewed sense of energy. By their own account, there was no more than a 24-hour period during which the band's cohesion was restored.
Es hatte nämlich den Anschein, als wäre der Spaß an der Musik allmählich in den Hintergrund gerückt. Schließlich war man, seit dem Abschluss an der Schule, nahezu ausschließlich mit dem Proben, Experimentieren und dem Touren von Festival zu Festival beschäftigt. So etwas hinterlässt Spuren – insbesondere, wenn man noch so jung an Jahren ist. Es geschah dann, fast in der Mitte Frankreichs (in der Touraine), wo man sich die Zeit nahm, um die Zukunft mit neuer Energie angehen zu können. Wie sie behaupten, dauerte es keine 24 Stunden, bis der Zusammenhalt wieder hergestellt war.
Gone were the days of the often gruelling search for a strategy, the rehearsals in the garage and the "home recordings". Spontaneity was suddenly at the forefront and professional recording in a studio was the norm. In addition, the bass, the keyboards and the drums moved more into the background, while the guitar took up a new position as the central instrument. It was digitally tinkered with in the studio rather than tested live in front of an audience. The result was a strong sense of authenticity.
Vorbei war die Zeit der oft zermürbenden Strategiesuche, der Proben in der Garage und des “Homerecording”. Spontanität stand plötzlich im Vordergrund und professionelle Aufnahmen im Tonstudio. Außerdem rückten Bass, Keyboard und Schlagzeug mehr in den Hintergrund, während die Gitarre als zentrales Instrument einen neuen Platz einnahm. Es wurde nicht mehr vor Publikum live getestet, sondern im Studio digital getüftelt. Eine starke Authentizität wurde so aufgebaut.
Playground was, and still is, a testament to the friendship that has existed between friends since their youth. The influence of other styles of music and other perspectives on society is a natural extension of this. In 'Brighter Days' the differences between cultures are highlighted, while in 'Open Your Heart' there are pop elements as well as jazz. Whether it is a ballad ('Follow Into The Wild') or an energetic progression ('Double Spiral') - the spectrum seems to be all-encompassing. With this kind of jazz (paired with rap, house, soul and productions with a delicate funk touch), the Lehmanns Brothers prove in an impressive way that nothing has to be taboo.
Playground wurde und ist der Freundschaftsbeweis unter den Freunden seit Jugendtagen. Automatisch erweitert sich auch die Einflussnahme anderer musikalischer Stilrichtungen und Sichtweisen auf die Gesellschaft. ‘Brighter Days’ hebt die Unterschiede zwischen den Kulturen in den Vordergrund, während bei ‘Open Your Heart’ auch poppige Elemente neben dem Jazz Einzug halten. Ob Ballade (‘Follow Into The Wild’) oder hochenergetische Progressivität (‘Double Spiral’) - das Spektrum scheint allumfassend. Mit dieser Art von Jazz (gepaart mit Rap, House, Soul und zartem Funk gefärbten Produktionen) beweisen die Lehmanns Brothers eindrucksvoll, dass nichts einem Tabu unterliegen muss.
