In order to round off the monthly Jazz-Matinée, another edition with new releases was actually planned for this month. But as is so often the case in life, things usually turn out to be different from what was originally planned. And so it is that today an artist is taking to the stage who is already far too well known for me to have to introduce him to you. If it were not for two events that have made it absolutely necessary to make an exception. The first is that Paolo Conte is presenting a live album of an exceptional quality, and the second is that the cinema film of this concert is being released this month.
Zum monatlichen Abschluss der Jazz-Matinee war eigentlich eine weitere Ausgabe mit Neuerscheinungen in diesem Monat geplant. Doch, wie so oft im Leben, kommt dann meist vieles anders, als ursprünglich gedacht. So betritt heute ein Künstler die Bühne, der bereits viel zu bekannt ist, um von mir vorgestellt werden zu müssen. Wären da nicht zwei Ereignisse, die eine Ausnahme zwingend erfordern. Zum einen präsentiert Paolo Conte ein Livealbum von ganz besonderer Qualität und zum anderen startet in diesem Monat der Kinofilm zu jenem Konzert.
The point of departure for all that can now be seen and heard is Paolo Conte's performance in this palace of high culture. Until then, no musician from the 'popular entertainment' sector had ever been allowed on stage. This all changed on 19 February 2023, when the Italian singer-songwriter and exceptional artist, often referred to as the "grumpy bard", took to the stage at La Scala in Milan. He performed 19 of his songs.
Ausgangspunkt zu all dem, was es nun als Resultat zu sehen und zu hören gibt, ist Paolo Contes Auftritt in jenem Palast der Hochkultur, dessen Bühne zuvor noch nie ein Musiker aus dem Bereich »populäre Unterhaltung« betreten durfte. Das änderte sich schlagartig am 19. Februar 2023. An jenem Abend bestimmte der italienische Liedermacher und oft als “Grummel-Barde” bezeichnete Ausnahmekünstler das Geschehen in der Mailänder Scala und gab 19 seiner Songs zum Besten.
It was an undocumented event in the hallowed halls of classical music. Director Giorgio Testi was determined not to miss it. The filmmaker captured the concert with his camera and has worked with bands and solo artists such as The Rolling Stones, The Killers, Gorillaz, Andrea Bocelli and Amy Winehouse. He has created a documentary that captures the passion for music with footage of the preparations for the show, rehearsals, Paolo Conte's arrival at the theatre, sound check and backstage snapshots.
Dieses Ereignis am heiligen Ort der klassischen Musik wollte sich auch der Regisseur Giorgio Testi nicht undokumentiert entgehen lassen. Der Filmemacher, der zuvor bereits mit Bands und Solisten wie The Rolling Stones, The Killers, Gorillaz, Andrea Bocelli oder Amy Winehouse zusammenarbeitete, hielt dieses Konzert mit seiner Kamera fest. Mit Aufnahmen, die die Vorbereitung der Show, die Proben, die Ankunft von Paolo Conte im Theater, Schnappschüsse des Soundchecks, sowie die Backstage zeigen, formte er einen Dokumentarfilm, der die Leidenschaft für die Musik in sich hat.
So who is this Paolo Conte who has been the subject of a New York Times review? “A raspy smoker's voice, a piano style that seems as much at home in a honky-tonk bar as in a tango palace or a Broadway cabaret, and the world view of a weathered romantic have made Paolo Conte one of Italy's best-known songwriters.” I would argue that the musician, who was born on the 6th of January 1937 in Asti in the north of Italy, has long been known far beyond the borders of his native country.
Aber wer ist überhaupt dieser Paolo Conte, der seitens der »New York Times« wie folgt beschrieben wird: "Die barsche Raucherstimme, ein Klavierstil, der in einer Honky-Tonk-Bar genauso zu Hause zu sein scheint wie in einem Tango-Palast oder einem Broadway-Cabaret, und die Weltanschauung eines wettergegerbten Romantikers haben Paolo Conte in Italien zu einem bestens bekannten Songwriter gemacht.” Dem halte ich entgegen, dass der am 6. Januar 1937 in Asti (Norditalien) geborene Musiker längst weit über die Grenzen seines Heimatlandes bekannt ist.
Paolo Conte should actually be known as Dr. jur., as not only did he graduate with this degree, but he also worked as a lawyer for a number of years - albeit always with the 'side jobs' of writing songs and playing the vibraphone in local bands. Although he came third in a jazz competition in Oslo in 1960 and signed a recording contract with RCA, his compositions were usually included in the repertoire of other artists. These include Adriano Celentano's La coppia più bella del mondo and Azzurro, Caterina Caselli's Insieme a te non ci sto più, Patty Pravo's Tripoli '69, Enzo Jannacci's Messico e nuvole and Bruno Lauzi's Genova per noi and Onda su onda.
Eigentlich müsste dem Namen Paolo Conte der Titel Dr. jur. vorgesetzt werden, da er dieses Studium nicht nur abschloss, sondern auch einige Jahre als Rechtsanwalt arbeitete - allerdings immer mit den “Nebenbeschäftigungen” Songs zu schreiben und das Vibrafon in lokalen Bands zu spielen. Obwohl er 1960 bei einem Jazzwettbewerb in Oslo den dritten Platz ergatterte und bei RCA einen Plattenvertrag unterschrieb, wurden seine Kompositionen doch meist von anderen Künstlern ins Repertoire aufgenommen. So zum Beispiel: “La coppia più bella del mondo” und “Azzurro” etwa von Adriano Celentano, “Insieme a te non ci sto più” durch Caterina Caselli, “Tripoli ‘69” durch Patty Pravo, “Messico e nuvole” durch Enzo Jannacci sowie “Genova per noi” und “Onda su onda” durch Bruno Lauzi.
It was not until 1972 that Paolo Conte began to release albums under his own name on a regular basis. And with each one he released, he continued to become better known and popular. With the double album 'Aguaplano', he left his mother tongue, Italian, for the first time and presented compositions in French and English. The world tour that followed also took him to the legendary New York jazz club 'Blue Note', where he was celebrated by the audience with a standing ovation. With 39 albums released to date, it is easy to imagine the number of lines that have flowed from the pen of this exceptional artist.
Es dauert bis 1972, ehe Paolo Conte nicht begann in regelmäßigen Abständen unter eigenem Namen zu veröffentlichen. Und mit jedem neuen Album steigerte er seinen Bekannt- und Beliebtheitsgrad. Mit dem Doppelalbum “Aguaplano” verlässt er dann auch erstmals seine italienische Muttersprache und präsentiert Kompositionen in Französisch und Englisch. Die anschließende Welttournee führt ihn dabei auch in den legendären New Yorker Jazzclub „Blue Note“, wo er vom Publikum mit stehenden Ovationen gefeiert wird. Bei bislang 39 veröffentlichten Alben, kann man sich vorstellen, wie viele Zeilen dem Ausnahmekünstler dabei aus der Feder flossen. Für die Wertigkeit dieser niedergeschriebenen Gedanken wurde er mehrfach vonseiten der Literaturkritik ausgezeichnet.
