The call

"I understand you, my life, I just can't get used to this new time. Everything seems so unreal to me, two years ago we were so happy and full of many projects, you were so enthusiastic about the future and now you are just a tired and jaded man of life, without time, without love." Cecilia's words took Erick back to a cyclical instant of memories, where he had been immensely happy.

Erick was unaware of this new tired man, listless of life, unhappy and with a sadness that accompanied his heart throughout the day. "What have I become? I swore I would never change and now I am this terrible demon, dominated by materialism and superfluous vanities," the man spoke, exhuming that being lost among obligations and routines.

Ignotophobia

"It's almost midnight, who could be bothering me at this hour?" I asked myself. "No one has my new number, only my agent, and he wouldn't call me on a weekend."

The lightning flashes of the storm echoed imposingly. The noise of the dripping seemed to transform into lacerating knives piercing the ground. My heart raced with panic as I heard the new incoming call; sponsored by that same unknown number.

I took steps backward until I was stopped by a wall. "No! I'm not answering! I'm not answering an unknown number!" I vociferated stubbornly.

My hands were shaking as the horrendous ring, ring of my phone rang at the top of my lungs. I'd rather die than answer it.

Between the lashing of the horrendous tunes, there was a manifesto of rage and anxiety. I gritted my teeth like a rabid animal and articulated my fingers into fists with my hands. With a bound, I lunged for the phone and grabbed it. I immediately took the call, not caring about the consequences of the unknown.

Andrea's Dilemna

"Andrea! I'm very sorry. Please don't let our five years of blissful union go down the drain. For the sake of our only daughter, please forgive me."

"Your daughter?" I blurted and continued.

"Heaven is not yours and would never be. I was pregnant with her before the wedding. I kept it to myself because I didn't want the church wedding to be cancelled. So all these years, I've lived with someone as despicable as you? You moved into his house, pretending to be Harry, and enjoyed everything he laboured for? I would make sure you pay for all your evil deeds." I snapped, picked up my phone, and called the cops.

It all started with a phone call.

"Hello, please I need to make a phone call. Can I use your phone?", He asked Lolade.

"Sure, why not", she answered and gave her cell phone to him.

"Do you want to call the driver", she asked.

"I don't have his number, let me try my phone if he is going to pick up", he replied.

grrnnnn grrnn, the phone rang but no one picked it up.
e tried more but no one answered the phone.

"Thank you, the driver is not picking up", he returned the phone and she felt pity for him.

Lolade went inside the school and returned.

"We have about an hour to the exam, let's keep trying", she gave out her phone again to him.

BACK TO WYOMING

I went ahead and processed my college application, and luckily, I was accepted into the two colleges I applied to. I chose the college far away from home, and Zoe helped me out with my flight ticket and first-year fees. My parents said that they wouldn’t support me. And so I left home without looking back.

Today, on the morning of July 26, 2023, I woke up to go and open the window blinds. The soft glow from the morning sun hits my face. I took a deep breath and realized that this day, twelve years ago, I left home. I left my family of nine, including my father, mother, and six siblings.

I am Tamela Fredrick, editor at Rouge magazine in New York, the last-born child of the Rufus Fredricks.

Cut Your Coat

But just as he was about to swallow the first ball he threw in his mouth, his phone rang. It was his boss calling. "shit" he exclaimed as he picked up the phone.

"hello sir" he started and waited for a few minutes after which he quickly washed his hand and dashed out of the restaurant, muttering inaudibly to himself. He was confused whether to undress in the car or to just go home like that. He started the car and rushed off to the house.

As he stepped out of the car, he saw his boss outside, so he just hurried to open the door and let him in.

"what are you doing in my clothes" his boss started as he stepped into the house, looking around in an inspective manner.

Petrichor

Scents have a peculiar habit of transporting you to a place in time. I discovered the world of niche perfumery that tries to encapsulate memories or characters in a bottle.
One of my favourite scent memories is that of raindrops on wet earth. It has a clean, crisp scent that smells like soil after the rain has washed away everything from it. In India, we have a peculiar affinity for it. It is said that rain has the ability to purify things and is thus a source of joy.

From childhood memories of making paper boats, dancing, and jumping under rain showers to mom making pakodas and samosas when the drizzling started.

I later learned that this particular scent is called petrichor. I went in search of a perfume that reminded me of this memory.
