Man and Birds: The Raid of Seagulls

image.png

Moreover, instead of guns and cannons, the townsfolk used mops, nets, dusters, and everyday household tools that one could get their hands on. And no, man and birds were never harmed during these "skirmishes," although feathers were certainly ruffled.

So when did these fights between man and birds start precisely?

According to the record, it all started five years ago. One Saturday morning, a flock of seagulls suddenly appeared out of nowhere and raided the open boxes of seafood scattered around the market. After snatching a lot of fish, the seagulls flew away. The unexpected raid from the seagulls caught the townsfolk so off-guard that they could only react once the birds left.

A Curious Mind

image.png

Source

There is a saying that “Curiosity is a mind in search of knowledge" and knowledge is said to be power. As humans, we are mostly in search of that knowledge as we learn, unlearn and relearn every day.

I am naturally an inquisitive person as I love asking questions about things I don't understand and I always like it when I get answers to them. In cases where I don't get an immediate answer, I keep asking till I get the required answer.

In terms of superstitious belief, I will ask questions on reasons why a certain thing is said to be forbidden or taboo. A trait my mum sometimes dislikes because I would inquire as to the reasons why I am supposed to stop doing a particular thing. Often time, she doesn't have answers to them herself and the reply she gives is that "I just know it's not good" and expects me to just accept that answer.

They are alive

image.png

Source

Sometimes I wondered if they were alive. I would come close to smell their leaves and flowers, and when it rained, I liked to see the drops of water sliding on their leaves until they reached the ground. I imagined that they were happy when it rained. Could it be that the plants feel cold, Could it be that when I carelessly run among them, break a branch, or tear off a leaf or a flower, they feel pain? Those were some of the thoughts that came to my childish mind.

My mother had some plants planted in planters in the backyard of the house, and it was an event when any of them bloomed, especially the Lady of the Night, a species with flowers of strong and sweet aroma that opened its petals at midnight to release its spell only for a few hours to close and dry in the early morning light.

A short but exciting moment that my mother could not miss and that unique and special night, there she and I were admiring the beautiful flower opening its white petals and getting intoxicated with its aroma.

"How beautiful it is! Don't you think so, daughter?"

The new girl, Chima

image.png

"Do I smell jealousy?" Sarah laughed, poking me by my armpit in an attempt to tickle me, which I resisted vehemently. She may have seen contempt written over me as her jovial countenance quickly dissipated, hopefully realizing her best friend was not in the best of states. "You don’t have to take it personal, Greg; if you get to know her, you’ll understand she’s a beautiful soul". Sarah spoke with some seriousness in her tone.

Fine, I didn’t realize she bewitched you also." I replied, picked up my school bag, and walked out of the classroom, disappointed and angry. As I exited the classroom, I bumped into someone who headed straight to the ground, but due to my swift grasp and her efforts to prevent a fall, I was able to hold her arm to maintain equilibrium, thereby preventing a fall even though the books in her hand suffered the fall. "Chima again?" My thoughts ran wild, and a part of me wished I had just let her have the fall.

Graduation

Author's own image, edited in Canva

How curious that on the day of my graduation, I didn't want photos or feel that excited! It was wonderful to see how far I had come, but at the same time, it was stressful.

When I went to receive the degree, my parents were standing like a pack of dogs taking pictures of me, it was all photo and photo. "Stand here with your mother, stand here with your father, and stand with your sister. And for God's sake, smile!"

While I was running to eat, after the engineering ceremony came the officer ceremony and that was two hours of standing with an empty stomach.

Hi Trent

"Hi Trent, I saw you walking out of the building and I just knew that you would be somewhere in the woods, so I ran around the woods near the walls till I found you and here you are and I was right. What is that?" She said in one breath.
Took me 10 seconds to digest all she said while her eyes were wide looking at the paper like a puppy that has seen a butterfly on a flower. Her joy and energy was contagious and I found myself smiling.
"It's my assignment." I finally said walking to sit down near a tree stomp while she sat on the grass and played drums with some sticks - where or when she got the sticks, I do not know.
"What's the assignment about?" She asked, throwing a stick away and using the other stick to draw on the ground.
"I'm meant to write a letter, a letter to myself." I answered, suddenly curious about what she was drawing on the floor.

Sweet Like Sugar

I was having an episode!

“Mama!” I gripped the table and held my head with another hand. My phone fell to the ground. Plap!

Michael stopped talking and looked at me with wide eyes.

“Are you okay!?” he got up. His voice sounded muffly. My heart began to pound against my rib cage. Oh no, was I gonna pass out!? I hadn’t passed out in a long time! I don't wanna pass out! Please, not today!

“Teya don’t worry, I’m coming! Did you eat this morning?” Things were blurry, but I could see the shape of Mama rushing over to me.

“Teya’s diabetic, this could be a hypo episode,” Mama told Michael.

I slipped, but before I fell to the ground, Michael lifted me up in his arms, bridal-style. At least now I knew how the girl in my book felt when she got picked up: helpless and weak. Probably not as thrilled as I thought since when you're in danger, you’re not really focused on having romantic feelings.
