Compromise

I opened the door to my brother's room when I heard Bisola wailing from in there. Sola had earlier left home on that Saturday to go for a naming ceremony. He was supposed to go with his wife, but after another round of arguments, he went out alone.
I heard his wife crying immediately afterwards and I just had to enter the room uninvited. I can't pretend I didn't hear, my heart was torn for her.
"It's okay, Bisola. What's the matter?" I asked sitting beside her on the bed.

Christmas birthday

“Yes! And I won the best gift for this year; pay up, people!.” I laughed. It was a normal tradition in the house to pay the person whose gifts affected our parents the most. And my brothers have always been ahead of me, but guess what? I won this Christmas. I got back my savings in no time, which I found funny. We exchanged gifts, ate, and had fun. I was just honestly happy that for once I got what my mom liked because, from that day on, that pendant never left her neck.

My Unexpected Gift

As I approached the envelope, contemplating its potential contents, the fantasy of a cash gift crossed my mind. With a smile, I picked it up.
Mere looking at it, it was looking like sum of money wrapped in two folds into the envelope and knowing how bad I needed money for some personal needs got me excited. I already thought of things my lucky gift will get me and I couldn't wait to count how much was in the envelope.

The fallen doll

"I'm sorry, daughter, we can't get off in this darkness to look for her".
I sat there without saying anything with tears running down my cheeks and that's how I got home.
I felt sad and guilty for having lost her and I imagined her lying in the dark and cold street, helpless and with her yellow dress wet from the rain.
I went to sleep without eating, I had no appetite and my mother left me alone. My sisters, as a sign of solidarity and respect for my sadness, put away their dolls.

Raleigh Bicycle - Things are not always the way they seem

image.png

When the boy, Derrick, hopped on me and gave a sprint, I yelled, giving way suddenly to the earth beneath my tires. Sticks, stones, and leaves flying around us. I didn't know how to speak their language so I couldn't ask him to stop. He seemed to be enjoying himself riding like that, so I just let him, waiting for the inevitable to happen.
When his hands gave way under my handlebars, I knew what was coming for him. He left my saddle before I could stop myself, I knew we would both have a heavy crash but I didn't want to collide with him so I let myself run down the slope a little further before breaking my fall with my sprocket.

Missing

image.png

Johnny looked at his mom with wide solemn eyes and hitched in a big breath. “But Mom, I’m telling the truth. It was parked right there on the path. I sat on that big flat rock and took off my shoes to go wading. I went upstream looking for frogs and turtles until my feet got too cold and I went back to the rock - hey wait! My shoes weren’t on the rock where I left them, they were in the water. Do you think somebody was there? Somebody stole my bike?”
