A moment of light

"Because that's your grandfather over there," the old woman pointed to the star-studded sky, a light that was visible, yellow, bright.

"And that must be the teacher Lulu," the mother pointed with her finger. The children fixed their eyes on the star and sighed, finding, perhaps, in that patch of light, something that reminded them of the dead teacher.

"And Roku, our dog, is he here too?" -Joel asked, looking for a special sign in the stars that shone like sequins in the night.

"Of course. There he is. That's him," the mother fixed her finger and her eyes on a tiny, almost invisible star. Then the children jumped up and down and waved to the sky with their little hands.

A wish at birth

The next day they accompanied their grandfather to take the sheep to a small valley near a stream. There were no more pastures in the mountain range where they lived. Following the sheep were Isis and Freckles.

They came to a place where a very green grass grew, and the hungry sheep began to eat. The dogs were running from one place to another, keeping watch.

"Cristóbal! Miguel! Stay close to me. The dogs are nervous, they sense danger nearby"

"It could be the saurians, grandfather! Let me go see, they're hiding in the caves".

The future is ours

My mom set the cake on a small rickety table supported at its legs by stones to gain some stability. About seven other children of my age bracket gathered around me and sang me a happy birthday song in our 'ghetto' way. The love was massive and enough to cause some tears to drop from my eyes. The cake was round and on it was an inscription, 'HBD my star Angel' and though I was not literate, I could read and understand the words as I had applied myself to home study from old newspaper litters I hoarded.

"Mom, what's that in the sky?" I pointed to a moving star, distracting my little audience and well-wishers.

The Surprise Drive Home

image.png

The wind howled from all directions beating down on her windshield like it was Thor's hammer as she drove home. It felt like she was the only one commuter on the road that night because, in the few miles she had driven she hadn't seen any other car drive past her. But she kept being strong behind the steering, her mission the fuel driving her. Her headlight piercing through the dark night.

"Come on Rachel, you can do this. You've driven in the worst terrain before." She muttered, motivating herself.

There`s nothing exiting

It didn't take long for me to realise that the life I longed for was just a fantasy. My spirit, soul, and body might never align with it. The outgoing life I craved settled into a triangular routine, from school to church, home, and back to school. I also missed the connection with my family, the arguments, laughter, and the joy of coming home to a prepaid meal. Things were different in my new home; I had to prepare my own meals after school, no matter how tired I was. Sometimes, I ended up having biscuits for dinner.

The grass is always greener on the other side was my mantra before leaving home. I came to realise that there was nothing too exciting beyond my parent's watchful eyes, and that the lifestyle I yearned for was not who I wanted to be.

Melody For The Moon

image.png

Unsplash

One morning, motivated by an idea that moved my heart, I decided to do something to get his attention. I took my cello and began to compose a melody. I demanded more than I should have and, when the sounds went out of tune, I let myself be dragged down by a perverse frustration. There were mishaps, anger, and insecurities, but finally, I was able to finish my piece of music.

I waited for a special night when the moon was full. I positioned myself next to the lilies and primroses, waiting for the beautiful maiden of space to manifest herself. As I felt her presence, I prepared myself. I was very anxious and began to play my melody. She twirled gracefully as she sang. I was able to detail more precisely how beautiful her shiny porcelain skin was.

Echoes of Despair: Tales from the Kingdom of Zulu

They all sat on the floor to eat the food Mara had prepared for them. "Daddy, I want to ask a question," Sansa started the discussion. "Will we ever know the comforts of the upper town?" Jon's gaze softened as he stood up and asked his children to follow him outside. "Look to the star," Sansa and Bran said, lifting up their eyes to the heavens full of stars. "Now, pick a star, look upon it, and make a wish for anything you want. Wish upon a star," Jon said. The two kids said their wishes out loud. "I want to live in the upper city," Sansa said. "I want to go hunting with my father," Bran said.

"Good, now that you have made a wish, let's go inside so I can tell you the final part." Jon told his kids as he made his way into the house. After they got in, he pulled the only chair they had and sat on it while he instructed his kids to sit on the floor.
